The Vegan Collagen Serum That Actually Plumps Up The Skin

Real collagen may be just a widely-believed myth, but have you ever tried plant-based collagen? See what happened when our reader Esther took it for a spin.

Welcome to KULALA Beauty Club, where YOU our dear readers help us suss out the best in the beautysphere. This week, we brought back Esther (@estheryphoto) with her review of the Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen. Read her last review here.

The tricky thing about new beauty products is how good (or bad) they could potentially fit into your skincare routine. Some combinations just don’t work out. It takes dollars, time, and effort to put together an ensemble that ultimately suits your skin type. As a full-time student, I struggled to find time to put this product to the test. But still, I managed to squeeze it into my routine, and you can bet I didn’t regret it.

My initial reaction was one of skepticism. For starters, the Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen sits a little high on the price range. More importantly, weren’t collagen molecules said to be too large to be absorbed by the skin? Was this just another beauty scam? Yet, my doubts were quickly put to rest once I discovered the formula consisted of plant-based collagen instead, including naturally sourced ingredients like micro-algae oil beads, vitamin E, omega fatty acids and more. The product also boasted elasticity-restoring capabilities that promised to plump up your complexion within days. This sounded too good to be true, but there was no harm giving it a shot.

The serum came with a regular dropper applicator and spread smoothly onto the skin. What was particularly disappointing, however, was the sticky residue left, sometimes for hours. I recommend using this before heading to bed but never before makeup.Although, I can proudly testify to radiant and visibly plumper skin every morning after, and also noticed that my usually-oily T-zone area wasn’t producing as much oil as before. That added a major plus point for someone like me who relies heavily on powders.

To summarise, the Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen delivers on its promises, and outweighs the minor inconveniences. The serum fit easily into my routine and packed essential nourishment along with the hydration my skin needed. On a last note, the serum apparently also contains photosensitive ingredients. So store the product in a cool, dark place when not in use and you’re good to go!
