The Anti-Pollution Skincare To Add Into Your Skin Diet

Dear city dwellers, did you know that the air around you could take a toll on your skin? THE AIR! From serums to mists, these are the armour to fortify your skin with.

For most of us, sunscreen is something we all own because of the well-known damaging effects the sun can have on the skin – pigmentation, ageing and all that bad stuff. Yet, did you know that the air itself could be damaging to your skin, too?

For those who live in the city or going to a city with high pollution rates, take some notes.

In an urban environment, there is smog, smoke and dust that studies have proven to cause an increase melanin production in the skin, causing things like hyper-pigmentation, skin darkening, inflammation and the weakening of the skin’s barrier, exacerbating the effects of ageing. Frightening isn’t it?

As the hazards are invisible and the effects largely visible only in the long-term, it’s difficult to tell if the products do work or not. Many brands have taken a multi-beneficial route, targeting things like anti-ageing, hydration and sun-protection in one product. Science has yet to prove the best way to combat the effects of pollution, so our best bet is to choose products on the market that contain peptides, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to fortify, protect and calm the skin. Whether the pollution affects the skin or not, you benefit either way.

The more popular ones on the market include serums, purifying masks, clarifying cleansers and facial sprays for that extra layer of protection on-the-go. Below, we’ve rounded up the ones that will help us city dwellers and skincare-obsessives keep the environmental aggressors at bay, including this interesting one from the Oskia Citylife range that groups together toxic particles until they’re too big to penetrate the pores, rather than forming a layer over it. Science!
