Beauty Wars: We Tested 5 New Cleansers That Just Landed In Stores

From mud to clouds, we test how well these fare in terms of texture, hydration and of course, how fresh they leave the skin. So many winners!

Nothing beats coming home after a long day, stripping off all that makeup and giving it a good cleanse. It’s an essential part of any skincare routine and is the one thing that we can never leave out, not even when we’re about to collapse from fatigue. Without cleansers, your skincare wouldn’t work as effectively because the skin is covered in a layer of dirt.

Cleansers remove dirt, impurities, dead skin cells and oil. Depending on your skin type and issues, there are different cleansers out there to suit your needs. For dry skin types, opting for a cream cleanser, oil cleanser or micellar water would be a good choice as these usually contain better hydration properties. For oily or combination skin types, foam, gel, clay or powder cleansers are usually preferred as these are formulated to remove oil better.

On this month’s Beauty Wars, we tested out five types of cleansers, all fresh on our beauty radar, with some help from our KULALA Beauty Clubbers. From cream types that double up as masks, foams that cleanses and removes makeup, to a hydrating “cloud” cleanser, this is the place to be if you’re looking for a new one that won’t strip your natural oils away.

Allies of Skin Fresh Slate Brightening Cleanser + Masque

“The Allies of Skin Fresh Slate Brightening Cleanser + Masque has a gel cream texture that cleanses and exfoliates in one wash. It has a pleasant rose scent and can be used as a brightening mask on clean skin. The formula of vitamin C, argan oil and an antioxidant called astaxanthin, hydrates and moisturises the skin, injecting the good stuff back into the skin. My only qualm with it lies with the fact that it leaves a layer on the skin that can be scraped off with my fingernails, which gives the impression that my face is not clean – which is very much the opposite. When it’s dry, however, the skin feels soft and smooth, a far cry from the pastey texture when it’s wet.” – Natalyn, Team KULALA’s Writer and Graphic Designer

Boscia Everyday Gel-to-Mousse Cleanser

“The gel-to-mousse formula is a groundbreaker. The texture is thick and creamy, yet lathers smoothly on the skin. My face felt smooth, supple and instantaneously regenerated and refreshed after using it. The Boscia Everyday Gel-to-Mousse Cleanser also contains moisturising jojoba oil and willow herb, which helps to calm irritation and visible redness. I think this is a great addition to my cleansing ritual.” – Mishu (@papermartini)

Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser

“Despite its packaging that makes it look like a regular drugstore cleanser, Pixi’s Mud Glow Cleanser has a luxurious muddy green colour and texture that glides on my skin smoothly like a gel, and turns milky the more I massaged it onto my face. I really love that it removed all the dirt – one swipe across my face with my toner on a cotton pad tells me that – but doesn’t leave my skin feeling parched and stripped afterwards, probably due to the blend of hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and avocado oil. Perfect if your skin is prone to dry patches!” – Xue (@grumpymeg)

Glamglow Supercleanse Clearing Cream-To-Foam Cleanser

“The Supercleanse Clearing Cream-To-Foam Cleanser comes with a strong scent of eucalyptus, bamboo and charcoal. I’m guessing some may like it, but some may take some time to get used to it. I thought this cleanser was going to irritate my sensitive skin due to its strong scent. However, it did not leave my skin feeling itchy or dry after using it, and I’m pretty impressed with how soft and smooth my skin felt after. It doesn’t leave your skin oily or overly moisturised – the finish texture is just right. The best part of this cleanser is that it can be used as a makeup remover, too. It saves time for the busy people out there!” – Alverina (@aloebella)

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Cloud Cream Cleanser

“Staying true to its name, the Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Cloud Cream Cleanser is exactly as described. The texture is an ultra creamy and light “cloud” consistency, foaming up slightly with the touch of water. It feels really gentle on the skin, and doesn’t strip it of moisture after cleansing. Some cleansers I’ve tried tend to leave your skin feeling tight and “squeaky” clean, which I do not enjoy, but fortunately this cleanser that’s forumlated with hyaluronic acid and marshmallow root extract makes my skin feel really moisturised and baby-soft after. No more dry flaky skin for me!” – Naomi (@naomitham_)
