Beauty Wars: The Search For The Perfect Lip Gloss

Though the hair-caught-in-lip-gloss situation is inevitable, there are other factors that come into play. Find out how these few fared.
|

Day or night, whether it’s blazing hot or freezing cold out, we love a good glossy lip. Perhaps it is the influence of Glossier’s ethereal campaigns, what with the dewy skin and shiny lips, or the lustre of Rihanna applying a layer of Gloss Bomb on video. The effect is tantalising, enough for us to want to revisit the very product that defined our teenaged years.

We’ve raved about glossy lips before. And, over a year later, our take on it still hasn’t budged. With the influx of new, shiny contenders in the arena – because what Rihanna puts on her face is essentially beauty law – we readied ourselves for a brand new round of “Beauty Wars“, where we picked different glosses from different price points and pitted them against one another. Keep scrolling to see how they fared.

YSL Beaute Volupté Liquid Colour Balm

“The YSL Beaute Volupté Liquid Colour Balm may not be the shiniest of the bunch, but gives a more subtle glow over the lips. As the name suggests, it’s not as shiny as a gloss, but will still give your lips that dewy look. Moreover, the formula containing coconut water and pomegranate extract hydrates and softens the skin.” – Natalyn Chan, Team KULALA’s Writer and Web Manager

Marc Jacobs Enamoured Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer Gloss

“The Marc Jacobs Enamoured Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer Gloss is one I can’t get enough of. I personally like the minty effect it leaves on the lips, and applies easily. It’s not uncomfortably sticky, and gives the illusion of plumper lips. I’ve swatched a few other colours in-store too, and found that there are some without glitter, or with a more sheer formula. There’s something for everyone.” – Katrina Capel, Team KULALA’s Contributor

Dior Backstage Dior Addict Lip Maximizer

“I’ve been so obsessed with the Dior Backstage Dior Addict Lip Maximizer for over a year now, and I’m still not over it. There’s a slight tingly, minty sensation from the plumping effect, but nothing too uncomfortable. It’s not gloopy or sticky, but can still give you the patent-like effect with a thicker layer. More colours are coming to stores, too.” – Natalyn Chan, Team KULALA’s Writer and Web Manager

Tarte H2O Gloss

“Tarte’s H20 Gloss is truly as hydrating as it sounds. It’s shiny, for sure, but don’t expect opaque gloss colours. It has a halo-type finish and adds dimension to the lips. It works great as a lip topper too. My only wish is for the applicator to be stiffer, as it takes a bit of force to move the product around.” – Katrina Capel, Team KULALA’s Contributor

Becca Glow Gloss

“Becca is known for their highly pigmented products, so expect no less from this Glow Gloss. The shimmer shades are more on the sheer side, but they are fantastic lip toppers. This gloss isn’t unbearably sticky, has no tingly sensations and no odd taste.” – Natalyn Chan, Team KULALA’s Writer and Web Manager

Fenty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer

What’s not to love about the gloss bomb? Rihanna made it. It-girls of Instagram wear it. And your lips? They’ll love it. We know we do! The gloss bomb is not like its competitors. Currently only available in one unique shine, it was created by the almighty Bad Gal Riri as a universal shade that would compliment EVERY skin tone. The gloss bomb will promise you both shine and moisture. It feels so good when it’s on your lips, and the consistency is definitely way more buttery than tacky. It also carries a surprisingly reasonable price tag. When compared against drugstore glosses, the gloss bomb weighs in pretty affordably when we calculated how much each millilitre of its insanely gorgeous product would cost. And we’re telling you, for its quality AND price, this is the glossiest bomb dot com. – Roxanne Chew, Team KULALA’s Contributor

Colourpop Ultra Glossy Lip

For all your gloss and glow agendas, Colourpop’s glosses could very possibly shine brighter than a spotlight. For its price tag, Colourpop’s glosses are surprisingly pigmented. If you’re not a big fan of nude and barely there glosses, Colour Pop will be your knight in shining armour. The colours are also so pretty, and they show up beautifully on virtually any skin tone. A slight tiny downside though is its slightly heavy formula that weighs down your lips. It feels almost like a wet coat that just sits there. Not the best feeling in the world, but if it’s a price I have to pay for beautiful lips, then I shall. – Roxanne Chew, Team KULALA’s Contributor
