Beauty Wars: The Very Best Liquid Foundations At Every Price Point
We've rounded up all our favourite long-wearing foundations that have made it into our ride-or-die list, including one that stayed on even after a swim!| July 25, 2018
For many, finding the perfect foundation is like striking the lottery. It is that hard to find one, and often enough, you either ride the trend wave or stick to the one you’ve been using since you were a teenager. But, just like skincare, foundations must suit your skin type or you might find yourself left with skin that has enough oil to fry an egg only halfway through the day.
Trying out foundations can also be a tiring ordeal, and if you accidentally overlook a detail, it’s going to cost you. The completely wrong shade. An oxidised, soppy, oily mess. A dry, chalky, streaky finish. You get the picture.
We love cushion foundations and while we’ve found really great ones – possibly the best one – regular liquid foundations still offer the most coverage, flexibility and durability. So, for this month’s Beauty Wars – it’s been a while eh? – we went back to the basics. The literal foundation of makeup routine. We’ve talked about several liquid foundations that we loved in the past, but new ones come up every day, the list has to be updated.
Here, we picked out seven of our most loved ones that have varying degrees of coverage and ability to last the day, and different types of finishes. We’ve arranged it in order from drugstore to high-end for your convenience. Who knows, your next swatch could be your perfect match.
Maybelline Superstay 24H Full Coverage Foundation
For many of us, splurging on foundation is somewhat a must, mostly because we associate a higher price with a higher quality product. But this Maybelline Superstay 24H Full Coverage Foundation is said to be a dupe for Huda Beauty’s #FauxFilter, which isn’t being sold in Singapore yet. The formula is hydrating, slightly dewy – which also means it’s more forgiving on the skin – and has really high coverage. It’s more suitable for dry to normal skin types as it can get a bit oily four to five hours in.
Lancôme Teint Miracle Hydrating Foundation
You get the best of both worlds in this little bottle with a formula that is hydrating and full coverage, yet matte and long-lasting. Pair it with a beauty blender and you’re all set. Furthermore, the Lancome Teint Miracle Hydrating Foundation is sweat-proof, so you don’t have to worry about it melting off your skin in the hot, hot sun.
NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation
For those who have trouble finding a proper foundation that has a range of shades that cater to your skin, NARS has it all. It’s no Fenty Beauty, but there are still a lot of choices. NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation is long-lasting, doesn’t change much in texture after a day out and has a medium to full coverage that’s easily buildable. The matte formula is just a bit drying, though, so use a moisturising primer to counter it and you’re set. Read our full review here.
Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation
You may not have heard of this Japanese brand before, but their foundation is just gorgeous. It’s dewy, hydrating and leaves you with a sort of second skin finish. While the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation checks all our boxes, it may be a little sheer on pesky skin days. The formula is buildable, though, so it’d just take a bit more time. Trade time for gorgeous skin? Sounds good.
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Giorgio Armani might not be available in Singapore yet, but if you ever chance upon it, don’t miss it. The medium coverage foundation gives your skin a dewy finish, keeping it hydrated and glowy. More importantly, it really doesn’t budge. We even tested it by swimming in the ocean in 30-degree weather and it stayed perfect throughout. A beauty blender is necessary, but we’re thoroughly obsessed with the finish and how long-lasting it is.
Diorskin Forever Undercover 24H Full Coverage Foundation
The Diorskin Forever Undercover 24H Full Coverage Foundation has captured our hearts in more ways than one with the full-coverage, lightweight and long-lasting properties. The formula would call for a hydrating primer because of the matte texture, but it saves us a lot of time that would otherwise be spent on concealing dark spots and pimples. It dries fast, o make sure to spread it on quickly.
Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Gel Touch Foundation
Out of all our favourites on this list, the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Gel Touch Foundation is the only one that comes in a gel formula. It’s odd, because you wouldn’t think it’d work so well, much less as a cushion. It’s incredibly light and cooling, has a dewy finish, and holds up throughout the day. It’s a light coverage foundation, but it covers up most of the redness and patchiness on the skin, which is impressive on its own. Quick, seamless and compact. It’s a dream.
