It’s Time To Update Your Rotation of Moisturisers

Because a little change of scenery – or rather, moisturisers – can do your skin plenty good, but only if you've got the right one in your hands.

It’s nearing the end of the year and if you’re anything like me, you’re down to the last bit of that prized moisturiser you’ve been using for the last one or half year, scooping and squeezing out every ounce possible to maximise the money you spent on it. Or perhaps, your skin has grown too used to your longtime favourite and it’s not working as good as it used to. Or perhaps, you’re just itching for change, for something that could really do great stuff for your skin.

If you check one or all of the above, I think it’s high time you hit refresh on your beauty routine and update the moisturisers that you keep on rotation. (Yes, plural, because sometimes one kind of moisturiser isn’t enough. Sometimes, variety can be good for the skin.) The number of creme de la creme moisturisers have gone up of late, so really, you’re spoiled for choice. Pick your poison.

Of course, the first question to ask yourself before you make the switch is to think about your skin needs and how much hydration it requires. Oily skin is tricky, but it still needs moisture, so water-based (or gel-based ones) are best compared to thick, creamy ones no matter how many rave reviews they get. For such skin types, consider Dr. Dennis Gross, Origins and June Jacobs.

For severely thirsty skin that requires a little more tender lovin’, it is a constant battle of getting the moisture to stay put without over-greasing your skin. Eve Lom and Clinique have good ones that will work through the night and give you dewy skin by morning. Below, I’ve rounded up some of the new (some newish) moisturisers to hit the market that I think deserve a spot in your rotation, depending on what your skin craves.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion

Oil-free, non-greasy and lightweight, Dr Dennis Gross’ Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion will replenish your skin like no other. This gel-cream has a time-released hydration that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water – uh, don’t know about you but that is impressive – basically leaving your skin supple and dewy all day.

Sunday Riley C.E.O. C + E Protect + Repair Moisturiser

We haven’t met a Sunday Riley product we didn’t like. For the majority of us who work in an air-conditioned office, the cold air sucks the moisture out of your skin like a thirsty child who’s been given a glass of cold lemonade. Slather on this intense dose of vitamin C from Sunday Riley that brightens and evens out skin tones while fighting signs of ageing and sun damage.

Eve Lom Moisture Mask

If you are looking for a super moisturiser, this might just be it. Rejuvenating the skin with sodium hyaluronate and vitamin E, Eve Lom’s Moisture Mask also combats environmental pollution and free radicals. Extremely important features in fast-paced city life. As the formula is rich, it is best to use this twice or week or even only when necessary, especially if you have very sensitive skin.

June Jacobs Brightening Moisturiser

Infused with lemon peel extract, this detoxifying and brightening moisturiser nourishes the skin with sweet almond extract and shea butter. Nothing softens quite like the combination of almond and shea butter! A little goes a long way, so a coin-sized amount for the entire face is perfect.

Elemental Herbology Cell Plumping Facial Hydrator SPF

Suitable for dry and mature skin conditions, this moisturiser is formulated with fatty acids and omega 7-rich macadamia oil. Regenerating dermal tissues and reducing fine lines and wrinkles, it works to return youth to your skin. You may, however, want to avoid blemish-prone areas with cream so as not to irritate your problem areas. (That’s what multi-masking is for.)

Origins Original Skin Matte Moisturiser with Willowherb

Blessed is she who finds a moisturiser steeped in blended essential oils. Not only do they deliver the hydration you need, the whole thing is such a therapeutic experience to start or end off your day. (We just like to uncap and take a big whiff before slathering it on.) Case in point: Origins’ Original Skin Matte Moisturiser formulated with sweet orange and geranium, and Canadian willowherb that has anti-oxidant and anti-acne properties.

Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief

Ladies with dry and flaky skin, take note. Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief – gotta feed that thirsty skin! – is a moisturiser that will absorb quickly into your skin, leaving a nice hydrated sheen. The non-sticky gel-cream texture is also perfect for those who find gels too light or creams too heavy and rich. It’s that perfect in-between!
