The Best of Beauty: Our April Favourites
On the menu: a cult-status night oil and lipstick, a mask of seaweed and lotus seeds, a concealer with a cashmere finish and a luxurious cleanser that isn't even out yet.| April 26, 2018
A lot of new products came through our doors this month, but our favourites gravitated toward the basics. A rediscovery of the first few types of beauty products that one buys during the early years of being inducted into the world of makeup and skincare, if you will. A frothy twice-a-day cleanser. A concealer. A bullet lipstick. Of course, we’re never not on the look out for the upper crust, grown-up stuff, like a cult-status night oil and a creamy mask with bits of seaweed and lotus.
Chanel La Mousse Anti-Pollution Cream-To-Foam Cleanser
We’ve been using the same cleanser – Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser, we all use it by pure coincidence – for a long time now, so it’s nice to switch things up with something completely different every once in a while. With just a pea-sized amount of Chanel’s new La Mousse and just a bit of water, the cleanser turns into a luxuriously creamy and thick foam that feels so comfortable on the skin. It washes off easily, too, leaving the skin feeling soft and tightened. There is a bit of that squeaky clean after-feeling, but it isn’t drying in the slightest. The blue micro-algae and marine salicornia extract that protect the skin from pollution are added bonuses. Let’s just say that this has made its way into our rotation of cleansers. (Note: The La Mousse is available at Chanel boutiques from end May onwards.)
Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Oil
Okay, somebody needs to bring this brand to Singapore pronto so we don’t have to go through a labyrinth to get our hands on it. Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Oil is one of its best-sellers and we can absolutely see why. Not only does it give the skin a hydrated, dewy glow from the pressed avocado, chia and grape seed oils, it goes further with retinol that repairs your skin as you sleep. Radiant is exactly the word to use when you look yourself in the mirror come morning. Plus, Luna has a plethora of other plant oils in it – chamomile, rosemary, blood orange, vetiver – that make the entire experience calming and aromatic.
Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Rescue Mask
There’s something about a mask with actual plant or fruit bits in it that feel especially luxurious. Combining seaweed, crushed lotus seeds, red algae and sea fennel extract and resulting in a creamy mixture reminiscent of nut butter or tahini sauce – not a bad thing, smells quite delicious actually – the mask is a very gentle exfoliant that woks to smoothen the skin. It does take some effort to rinse this off completely because of the seed and seaweed bits, but after that, our skin felt smoother, softer, clean and soothed. There also seems to be an ultra-light layer of oil left behind to moisturise the skin. To top it all off, the process only takes five minutes, perfect for a quick pick-me-up as you go through your morning routine.
YSL Beauty All Hours Full Coverage Concealer
Good concealers come by easy, but great ones take a little more work. YSL Beauty’s All Hours is extremely light and seems to melt into the skin very quickly, leaving behind a cashmere-like finish. None of that chalkiness that comes with some concealers. Considering how light it is, the concealer’s coverage is rather impressive, though it can be built up further to fuller coverage. We also like how small the applicator is, which means that there’s little chance of putting on too much in one stroke.
Kat Von D Studded Kiss Creme Lipstick in Lolita
We don’t know about you, but it seems like ultra matte liquid lipsticks are on its way out and traditional good ol’ bullets in satin finishes are back in. No lipstick really lasts “forever” without completely drying your puckers out, so why bother sacrificing comfort and hydration? Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Creme in Lolita delivers that highly covetable red-nude-brown shade with a smooth, even, pigmented and hydrated finish. If you want something a little more natural, just tap it on your lips and spread the colour out with your fingers.
