11 Effective Skin Quenchers That We Love (Besides Water)
No need to stress, because these will help chase all your summer skincare woes away. Grab the coconut and sunglasses!| July 19, 2017
One of the greatest things you can do for your skin is to “listen” to it and adjust your routine accordingly. Something that worked for you previously may completely turn its back on you a couple of months down the road when the environment changes.
Of the many beauty lessons that I’ve learned from Yoyo, one that I’ve really put into practice is the habit of switching products routinely instead of just sticking to two or three all the time. (We talked about this in our ultimate guide to masking.) Not only does this give you the excuse to unleash the kraken at Sephora, it also means that you have a well-stocked arsenal to fix your skin according to its needs. Skin flaking from all that air travel? Hydrate. Scorched and irritated from the sun? Cool and calm it down.
With the sun out in full force – well, more out than usual for us in this part of the world – it is not just our wardrobes that are getting an update. On top of the best sunscreens, we’re also stocking up on all things that serve to hydrate, cool, soothe and brighten our skin, so that there’s nothing to stop it from glowing like no tomorrow under that golden sun. Highlighters? Pfft, who needs them. (I said that for dramatic effect. I…still need highlighters in my life.)
When it comes to ingredients, you can’t go wrong with rose, aloe vera, cucumber and honey. Innisfree’s It’s Real Cucumber Sheet Masks and Sisley’s Black Rose Cream Mask kept our skin in tip-top shape while we were in the Maldives. Fresh’s Ultimate Nourishing Honey Mask is a longtime favourite of ours, but we’re also counting on By Terry’s Baume De Rose Face Cream, made with rose butter, black rose oil, rosehip oil and pastel rose extract. What can I say – I love a good rose-infused product. If truly intense hydration is what you seek, Lancome’s The Overnight Sleeping Mask, packed with goji berries, will give you plump and hydrated skin by morning. We only discovered this a year ago and we’re already at our third jar.
Of course, hydration’s not enough. You’ll want to brighten and protect, too. Erno Laszlo’s Hydra-Therapy Memory Sleep Mask hugs like a cushion, with winged kelp extract and raspberry and tomato stem cells boosting your skin’s elasticity and defences. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate fixes irritated and dull skin with just one sleep, giving you glowing skin by dawn. The most summer-y contender of them all, however, goes to Sunday Riley’s Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream. Infused with everything from pearl powder and papaya enzymes to good ol’ hyaluronic acid, Tidal promises glowing skin as you seek out those gnarly ocean waves. Fresh to death summer skin, here we come.
