7 Sunscreens That Won’t Screw Up Your Makeup

Turn your foundation to a slippery mess, these will not. Ultra-moisturising and smooth without leaving your face white as a sheet – we've got all your bases covered, sister.

Now, before we begin, let’s get something straight. If you’re not in the habit of wearing sunscreen daily, even on no-makeup days, you need to start doing it, pronto. You don’t need an expert to tell you what the sun does to the skin. Premature skin aging, hello? Don’t think for a second that this beauty rule only applies to afternoons on the beach or by the pool – as long as you’re outdoors, you need to block up.

We understand completely why people have reservations about slathering sunscreen, especially under makeup. We’ve been there once, so we know very well. There’s the fear of breaking out, for example, what with the extra layer of product added to your already sensitive skin. Some sunscreens also turn your carefully applied foundation into a slippery, goopy mess. It’s to a point where you’d rather risk the sun damage than have streaky makeup. The second reason is especially common, we find.

The hard way to go about this is through trial and error. Isn’t it always? But, of course, ain’t nobody got time for that. The easy way is to round your options down to the few popular ones and see which ones fit your skin best based on the experiences of others. Here’s where we come in. Our criteria: It has to be moisturising with adequate SPF, no white cast, dries quickly with no greasy residue and doesn’t mess up the foundation. And yes, no breakouts.

Shiseido’s Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion 50+ is wildly popular, but it is more for the heavy-duty stuff. If you’re going to be under the sun for long with makeup on, this is for you. Else, you can try Shiseido’s Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector SPF 42. Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ is a straightforward, no frills sunscreen. We like how lightweight it is and how easily it goes over the skin.

Missha’s All Around Safe Block Essence Sun 45 has a slightly intimidating texture, but as long as you go easy on it, you’ll find that it moisturises very well and the stickiness doesn’t stay on for long. Plus, it is the cheapest – and cutest – of the lot. If hydration is a big plus for you, Dr.Jart+’s Every Sun Day 50+ should be on your radar. Not only does it return moisture to your skin almost instantly – sensitive skin types included – it continues to lock in the moisture and even soothes irritated skin.

Finally, the super weights. For those who crave something a little more in their sunscreens and are more than willing to pay for it, Suqqu’s Face Protector Bright Up 50 is your guy. Going beyond the bare minimal, this gem – Yoyo’s uses this, FYI – also contains collagen and a light pearlescent tint to give you skin that actually glows. Sulwhasoo’s Snowise Whitening Essence Serum BB SPF50 is another one on the luxe end of the spectrum that we love. This, too, comes with added skincare properties such as white ginseng to brighten the skin and white cloud grass for protection against light and heat. If there’s anybody who knows how to keep your skin from frying under the sun, it is the Koreans and the Japanese. #trust
