The Simplest Way To Do A Burgundy Eye

Yeah, we're still really into it. *VERY* into it. We're not breaking up with the regular browns yet, but once you go burgundy, it is very hard to go back.

We’ve been going on and on about the burgundy eye for quite a while now, but that’s only because we just cannot get enough of it. Three times the fun of earthy tones, but not too bright that it becomes too hot to handle. In fact, we think the burgundy eye is well within anyone’s comfort zone once they get the hang of it. Once you go burgundy, regular browns err just ever so slightly on the boring side. Just slightly. Not breaking up with the old-school colours yet.

We got the NARS team to show you how to create intense burgundy eyes back in October during Singapore Fashion Week. It is a look that is perfect for frou-frou cocktails and wild festive parties, but perhaps less for an everyday look. The latter calls for something softer and more natural. Burgundy and natural? Well, yes. Stick around and you’ll see.

To create an everyday burgundy eye, we like to use the Violet Voss Holy Grail Eyeshadow Palette and the Chanel Les 4 Ombres Eyeshadow in Candeur Et Experience. We know, we know – the intense colour looks intimidating. Especially the brick-red one in the Chanel palette. The trick is to have a light earthy base first – see, not breaking up with browns yet – and then building up the burgundy from there. That way, you get to adjust the intensity to your liking. Tarte’s Tartelette in Bloom Clay Palette is our swear-by for the base.

Unfortunately, the Violet Voss and Chanel palettes are presently at unicorn-level rarity. We basically camped by our laptops for the Violet Voss one. If you’re too impatient to wait for restocks, we find that Colourpop’s eyeshadows in Drift, Central Perk and Paradox do the job just fine, especially if you like a little shine in your burgundy. Another pro tip if burgundy and cranberry eyeshadows are in short supply? Try blushes. That’s what the NARS team did for Exhibit’s Fall/Winter 2016 show.
