Breaking Down Chanel’s Crazy Feminine Couture Beauty

Everything you need to create those frosty eyes and petal red lips at Chanel's Spring 2017 couture show, right this way.

Chanel’s couture show on Tuesday was quite the stuff of dreams. Harking back to the 1930s, the dresses were huge, feathery and extremely sparkly. Lily-Rose Depp looked like she was wearing a giant pink cloud. The flattened, slicked-back hair played up the ethereal factor, as did the frosty eyes and petal red lips.

It was a reminder that while ready-to-wear fashion has become rather laid-back in the recent season, over-the-top grandeur and the fantasy still continue to reign in the field of couture. Considering how sucky the world has been of late, a temporary mental escape into that fantastical world of old-school couture is like a short sigh of relief.

We can’t tell you how to recreate the entire fantasy, but a bit of it? That we can do. Specifically, how to recreate that part-ice princess, part-forest elf runway beauty look. Elsa, who?

Note that there is hardly any makeup on the eyes. No eyeliner, no mascara. Just the amping up of the brows with the La Palette Sourcils De Chanel Brow Powder Duo and the Les 4 Ombres Codes Elegants on the lids, inner corner of the eye and the top of the crease. If you really want to go all out with the ethereal factor, dust on really, really fine holo white glitter on the outer corner of your eye and toward the temples. (The glitter Chanel used isn’t for sale, unforch.)

To really nail that glow, start with the Les Beiges Healthy Glow Fluid Foundation before topping of with the light-reflecting Eclat Lumiere to conceal those eye bags. That girlish flush is the work of the Joues Contraste Blush in Elegance.

Finally, those lips. It is such a lovely colour, isn’t it? Like a natural red, if that makes any sense. For the show, Chanel used the Rouge Allure Velvet in Libre. To really get those soft, petal lips, we suggest doing everything you can to make them super smooth. Elsa lived in biting cold, but you don’t see chapped lips on that girl.
