How To Turn Skincare Into A Step In Your Makeup Routine
Skincare before makeup, that we know. But skincare during your makeup routine? Today's lesson comes courtesy of...Kim Kardashian's ultra glowy Met Gala look!| May 12, 2017
There are two parts to every beauty aficionado’s beauty routine: the skincare half and the makeup half. More often than not, the first half is dependent on the other. If you nail the skincare bit, the makeup goes on better and tends to last longer. The oft tedious process of applying on foundation becomes a breeze when skin is ultra smooth and hydrated. Satin versus sandpaper, go figure.
So, skincare before makeup, that we know. But, is it possible for skincare to come in during your makeup routine? Now, here’s a very practical beauty lesson that we can all learn from one Kim Kardashian – and you don’t have to be in the pro-leagues to do it IRL. Apparently, her makeup artiste Mario Dedivanovic applied on the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate on her cheekbones to create that natural glow at the recent Met Gala. Dedivanovic has also stated several times that he prefers to use the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream in place of a traditional primer in Kim K’s makeup routine. Huh, the more you know.

Your treasured overnight sleeping masks have more uses than you think, too. This next beauty lesson comes from our pal Shaun Lee, who often does Yoyo’s makeup for her shoots and events. I once spotted him applying Laneige’s Sleeping Water Mask on Yoyo’s under-eye area after he was done gussying up her brows and lids. He used a Q-tip and applied the mask in a rolling motion. This step not only hydrates and brightens the under-eye region, it also mops up any runaway eye makeup.

Of course, if time is of the essence, it is entirely possible to mix your skincare directly into your makeup. Cover FX’s Custom Cover Drops lets you turn your favourite day moisturiser and sunblock into a tinted one, for instance, allowing you to skip the foundation on an off-duty day. Then, there’s the ever-expanding myriad of primers, illuminators and foundations that come with anti-ageing, hydrating and firming properties. Some seem to be more skincare than makeup. Tinted moisturisers are just the tip of the colossal iceberg, my friend.
