The Serum That Will Make Your Entire Serum Routine Even Better

It wasn't intended to be used this way, but there ain't no rules when it comes to beauty.

I am obsessed with serums. They’re lighter than conventional gel or cream moisturisers, they’re sufficiently hydrating and they seep into the skin at lightning speed, all qualities advantageous to my oily skin. Call me lazy, but some days I find myself skipping the moisturiser altogether and heading straight for my line of faithful serums. Uncap the bottle. Release the dropper. Pat the serum on. Repeat. I even have a special box for my serums. My precious. My other skincare products don’t get this much love, believe me.

Recently, thanks to Yoyo, I found a way to further my serum obsession. To make the entire process that I love even better. You’ve heard of Lancome’s Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate Serum, I wager? Sleek black bottle with a silver cap, famous for its anti-aging and skin smoothing properties? Yeah, that one.

On the surface, the serum checks all the boxes: hydrating, remarkably lightweight and quickly absorbed by the skin. Check, check, check. While the anti-wrinkle bit is a little hard to tell at this point – check back with me again in a couple of years – the serum nails the smoothening, brightening and plumping bit. I’m even going to say that it repairs crappy, tired skin as well. For instance, last week was very bad skin week for me. I counted three zits. (Opting to skip my skincare routine in favour of going to bed just a couple of minutes earlier probably had something to do with it. Along with the McChicken and two medium boxes of fries that I sorely regret.) I patted on a few drops of the serum, followed up with my usual string of products and the next day? Zits almost nearly gone.

But, wait! There’s more! Turns out, the Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Serum actually helps the skin absorb other serums better. Faster. It reminds me of La Mer’s Intensive Revitalising Mask. Skin feels more supple and bouncier, but it doesn’t feel heavy even though I’ve got at least three different serums on. (I did say I was obsessed, didn’t I?) Lancome probably didn’t plan for the serum to work this way – but now you know! It’s like when a box of cereal comes with 25% more cereal. Bonus. Cha-ching. We find that it works best if you apply it after your usual toner and eye cream, but before the serums and moisturisers. If you have an Advanced Genifique lying around, try it and see if it works the same way for you.
