Let’s Talk About Fragrances
Got a signature scent? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours.| June 3, 2016
Like a signature look, I think it’s important and actually pretty cool to have a signature scent. There’s just something very alluring and romantic about a woman leaving behind a presence even though she’s left the room, and people know that she was just there. But like nailing a look that people identify you with – we’re not all Emmanuelle Alts here – finding that scent that suits you perfectly takes plenty of experimentation at Sephora’s fragrance shelves, and maybe even that isn’t enough. I suppose that’s what fragrance consultations are for – but that’s another story for another time.
Have I found the fragrance? I don’t think so. I’ve come across many lovely fragrances, but none of them have – pardon the pun – hit all the exact right notes for me. When you know, you know. You know? That’s not to say that I don’t have my own armada of fragrances that I use depending on my mood. As notes go, I prefer the floral end of the spectrum with just the right punch of freshness. Not too citrusy, not too green and not overly sweet either.
Miu Miu EDP‘s got a good balance with that hidden edge in the akigalawood and patchouli. You’d think that it’ll be too much, but the rose and jasmine counter the woodiness very well. It isn’t heavy at all. And that bottle! Dior’s Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is the fail-proof go-to for those who like their scents floral without overpowering sweetness, but Burberry Brit and L’Eau D’Issey Florale are good alternatives. I like Jo Malone’s Peony & Blush Suede for its simplicity. If you love the smell of peonies and roses, this one’s really all you need. The wildly popular J’Adore EDP and YSL Parisienne EDP are my “nighttime” fragrances. Is it the bottle? Partly. Come on, we’ve all been influenced by packaging at least once or twice. Finally, on days that I want to feel like a hipster, I have Byredo’s Blanche. It’s airy with a real kick of freshness. I’m inclined to call it…clean. Trust me when I say that this one is not for everyone.
The same fragrance can smell differently to different noses. I may like the above, but you may absolutely hate them. Have you found your signature fragrance? Tell us what it is in the comments below.
