From Bubbles To Rice: We Tried 5 New Arrivals In The Sheet Mask Department

Ding! Ding! Ding! We hate to say this, but it looks like we may have new favourites in our mask arsenal.
|

Sheet masks – never had them for half of our lives, can’t imagine life without them now. For those of us who lack the time, finances or both to pop by the spa for a facial, sheet masks are a godsend. A miracle in a packet. They’re quick, typically affordable – compared to a three-figure beauty treatment, anyway – and if you play your cards right and make wise choices, they’ll work according to what your skin needs.

We here at Team KULALA are creatures of habit when it comes to masks, but since it has been some time since we updated our rotation of miracles-in-a-packet, we looked to the new arrivals section at Sephora for our what could be potential additions to our masking arsenal. We chose one K-Beauty favourite, one that was surprisingly entertaining (read: selfie fodder), one that is a little pricier than usual but may be worth every buck and two from an upcoming brand that just landed on our shores.

3CE Back To Baby Mask Nourishing Special

“Insert all ‘Baby Got Back’ jokes here. This one’s a little special: you begin with a ‘Glow Essence Stick’ which is an exfoliating stick steeped in oil essence, then follow up with a sheet mask. It is hydration on hydration, with a side of that covetable K-beauty glow. Coming from South Korea, the Back To Baby Mask performs as it says, but if your face is a little more towards the oily side, this may be a bit much what with the oil and the mask essence. As my face is a desert, I’m good. Sheet masks work best when the skin is first prepped with an exfoliant, so it is pretty cool that this one comes with its own scrub, just in case you forget or are feeling a little lazy.” – Natalyn, Writer and Graphic Designer

For Beloved One Flawless Brightening Ethyl Ascorbic Acid Bio-Cellulose Mask

“This one is two times thicket than most, but still extremely well-fitting on the face. (Actually one of the best fitting ones I’ve ever tried.) Surprisingly, it adheres very well to the skin and does not slide around the face unlike most bio-cellulose or gel-type masks. It smells fresh with a hint of sweetness that isn’t overpowering. I kept it on for 20 minutes longer than directed, but it still remained very moist despite that. After my little experiment, my complexion was significantly brightened with my skin looking and feeling hydrated and plump. Acne scars seemed slightly evened out, too. The effects carried on to the next morning! This mask makes me wonder what other magical things For Beloved One has up their sleeves.” – Rachel, Team Exhibit

Glamglow Bubblesheet™ Oxygenating Deep Cleanse Mask

“Let me start off by saying that this mask is a ton of fun. Don’t underestimate how entertaining it is to watch foam on your face bubble until you are beyond recognition. The mask feels extremely soft and comfortable on the skin and it doesn’t take long before the bubbling begins. The fizziness is not as intense as other oxygen masks I’ve tried – like Skin Inc’s Oxy-Recharge Bubble Mask – but I don’t think that is a bad thing. I peeled it off after three minutes and worked the leftover foam on my face into the skin. What I noticed is that it lathered even more, so you really get a good cleaning from this one mask. At the end of it all, my skin felt very clean, but without that uncomfortably squeakiness – my skin was smooth and soft. Spots that were previously a little red or dull evened out as well. Colour me impressed, or should I say bubble me impressed? Ho ho.” – Candice, Head Writer & Web Manager

WEI Rice Sprout Express Glow Illuminating Mask

“The WEI Rice Sprout is the first of its kind I’ve ever tried. Coming in a tube instead of a packet, you are supposed to pull the sheet mask out of the rice embryo essence with a pair of tweezers. I tested this at night, so it is a little hard to tell if it gave that promised, immediate lit-from-within effect. Despite my habit of rinsing my face after a sheet mask, but this one specifically said not to, so I listened and followed up with my serums and oils. I will say this: as I applied on my serums, I noticed that my skin felt smoother. The serums glided on more easily than usual. The mask essence that remained was also quite light, so your skin doesn’t feel heavy even as you go through the rest of your nighttime routine. As far as masks go, this isn’t too bad, but you probably can find cheaper alternatives.” –  Candice, Head Writer & Web Manager

WEI Yu Zhu Dewy Brilliance Sheet Mask

“With yu zhu – not the fruit, but the flowering plant also known as Solomon’s Seal – as the core ingredient, coupled with goji berry and green tea, this mask works to return intense moisture back to your skin while soothing any redness and irritation from say, a sunburn. It feels pretty nice on the skin with a noticeable cooling effect. Definitely hydrating, too. The small bumps on my skin also appeared less inflamed, though it may have been more to do with the hydrating properties of the mask. While it isn’t completely wondrous like the mask that Rachel tested, it does offer a quick fix if you need intense hydration in under 10 minutes.” – Natalyn, Writer and Graphic Designer
