No-Nonsense Spot Treatments That Actually Work

Fashion week stress has got your face threatening to declare an all out pimple war? There’s nothing to worry about when you have these holy grail spot treatment products.

Pimples really are the bane of my existence. If you think I’m being melodramatic, picture this: You wake up to the beautiful sounds of nature. It’s the morning and you can see the soft sun seeping in through your blinds. You smell coffee and you grab a sip before heading to the toilet. Next, you scream. Why? Because a pimple has appeared overnight and it appears to be staring back at you. You remember that you have a major social event to attend to at the end of the week, and you count the days it would take to get rid of it. You realise it’s not enough, and you scream again.

See my point? Pimples are the worst. They pop out of nowhere overnight and they take up residence on your face for a really long time. And that isn’t even the worst part. Anyone who has suffered a sudden breakout will know that stopping yourself from picking at it is undoubtedly the hardest thing to do. It feels like we’ve all been programmed to think that rubbing, touching, and even popping our pimples will make them go away quicker. Well, it’s time we stopped that habit.

To put this madness to an end, and to cut our pimples’ visitation short, we’re here with a no-nonsense guide on spot treatments and how we’ve come to survive these dire situations.

Before we dive into the how-tos of spot treatments, we have to warn you – they can get a little tricky, especially so when it comes to choosing the right product. But before you start panicking, trust us, it’s worth knowing about this.

In a nutshell, most spot treatments contain varying percentages of either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as main active ingredients. Salicylic acid breaks down the intercellular glue that holds skin cells together, so it works especially well for treating blemishes caused by clogged pores. Unlike the former, Benzoyl peroxide targets and thwarts the bacteria that caused the breakout, making it ideal for treating inflammatory acne blemishes. Now that we know what ingredients to look out for, what’s next?

Well, to get started with a spot treatment, you’ll have to identify the type of zit that is popping out. If it’s pus-filled, you have the green light to go ahead. But if it’s a cystic pimple (inflamed and hasn’t reached the surface yet), then we suggest waiting a few days for it to fully surface before applying the treatment because it will theoretically just dry your skin’s surface out instead of treating the zit.

As a general rule of thumb after cleansing your face, you should start with the lighter products, and end with the heavier products. Toners, spot treatments and serums should always come before lotions and moisturisers. With that said, you should only apply the spot treatment directly on the affected pimple. Spot treatment products are basically concentrated pimple creams. Applying it on a general area can actually do more harm than good. You can apply a dollop on ur finger and dot it around the different spots, or you could use a cotton bud for more precision.

For best results, allow at least five minutes before putting on your next product to ensure it doesn’t counter the benefits of the spot treatment. So always give your spot treatment time to fully absorb before applying your next product. Also, do not, and we repeat, DO NOT attempt to discount your spot treatments. Cheap and homemade DIY alternatives like toothpaste or baking soda mixed with lemon juice may worsen your breakout with an allergic reaction. Or even worse, it could potentially burn off the top layer of your skin and leave you with a nasty scar that will take even longer to heal, and harder to conceal. When dealing with pimples, we’d rather stick to products that we know will work.

We simply cannot stop obsessing over how much pimple spot treatments have saved our mornings. Especially so when it’s fashion week and all the stress that’s surrounding it. If there’s a pimple threatening to ruin our good makeup day, we’ll just slap on some spot treatment overnight and we know it’ll massively improve its healing rate.

If only we had superpowers where we could make breakouts vanish with a snap of our fingers. Well, one can dream. In the meantime, here to save our day are miracle products we can’t thank enough. The next time you get an unexpected visitor popping out on your face, you’ll know the drill.
