The One Thing To Do To Make Your Mask Work Even Better

Adding that extra step before masking can make all the difference, and it's easier than you think. Plus, some bonus tips for a better mask session.

Putting on a face mask counts as one of the simple pleasures of life, like removing a pair of high-waisted skinny jeans, peeling off a strip of falsies or just taking of the dang bra at the end of the day. It’s an easy way to inject a bit of that spa vibe into your routine that can calm both the skin and mind.

More than just a means to relax and fodder for your Instagram Story, face masks are also really great skin revitalisers and deep cleansers that often come in super handy when the skin needs more than a little boost, whether you’re up in the air or unwinding on your cushy bed.

Since masks don’t always come cheap, especially the super potent ones, it’s important to know how to maximise the effectiveness of one and get more bang for your buck.

It may sound pretty simple, but exfoliating before a mask can really help the ingredients to penetrate the skin easier. Exfoliate with an alpha or beta hydroxy acid (AHA/BHA) which are both way more gentle and effective than a physical scrub – that is, exfoliators with bits or god forbid, micro beads– and can also cleanse and brighten the skin. Other little things like washing your hands, using a spatula and not leaving the mask on for too long are also important factors that will let it help your skin best.

If you’d like to go the extra mile whilst saving time, try using multiple masks in succession. A hydrating sheet mask after a purifying clay mask to deliver moisture back into the skin is a really good tip for brighter skin overnight. Or if you’re really short of time, try multitasking i.e. different masks at once. A little rose where your skin is irritated, some clay where a potential zit lies, some ethyl ascorbic where dark spots need to be lightened.
