The Great Debate: Body Oil or Body Lotion?

Which team are you on? Is one necessarily better than the other? So many questions. We lay down the facts straight-up, once and for all.

Hydration is crucial for soft and silky skin, especially in colder and drier climates, but with the bazillion choices out there, should we be using body oils or body lotions? Is one better than the other – or should they be used together?

The biggest misconception about oils for the skin is the untrue fact that it clogs your pores. That it is too heavy and you’ll end up feeling and looking greasy. FALSE! Just like face oils, body oils provide a ton of benefits that help to moisturise the skin deep below. It also absorbs easily into the skin, a plus point that is often overlooked. Because of how well it hydrates, oils are ideal for repairing dry and rough skin, no matter the climate. We say apply it during or after a shower when the skin is at its most ready to absorb the good stuff.

Perhaps you’re more on Team Lotion? The lighter ones are generally better for the hotter and more humid climates as they also absorb into the skin quickly unlike heavier ones that tend to sit on the surface. While body oils are more likely to ride on botanical oils, lotions are more likely to feature nutrients like vitamins and acids.

Ultimately, using either one will provide the same moisturising goodness to the skin and boils down to your skin type and climate. But, if you’re able to go the extra mile, having both in your routine will give you skin akin to a goddess. (It takes commitment, of course.)
