The Indefinite List of Must-Buys From Drunk Elephant
There's been so much talk about this new cult-favourite skincare brand, that we couldn't help but wonder, is it worth the hype?| April 3, 2019
We’ve been hearing buzz about Drunk Elephant for months on end, rave reviews coming from all around. And of course, as beauty junkies, it took no time for us to swipe a few off of these colourful bottles off the shelves, to join our ever-growing horde of products.
Now, you might think we’re running a bit behind on this review, but we’ve really been putting it to the test. For a good three months, we flew to different cities, put our skin in contrasting climates, and observed how these Drunk Elephant would impact our skin.
The curious name, Drunk Elephant, actually comes from a myth that elephants love to eat the fruit of Marula trees. Once consumed, fermentation occurs inside their tummies, and they become drunk! Marula oil can be found in many of their products, all of which are free from six suspicious ingredients – Essential Oils, Drying Alcohols, Silicones, Chemical Screens, Fragrance/Dyes and SLS – and clinically test it to ensure that these formulas fit all skin types. Keep reading to see what we really think about it.
B-Hydra™ Intensive Hydration Serum
Without a doubt, we were most excited for serums, because we’re all aware of how potent and effective these things are. The mildest of the three: the B-Hydra™ Intensive Hydration Serum strikes you as a simple, yet effective moisturising serum, delivering ceramides, sodium hyaluronic crosspolymer, and vitamin B5, which effectively translates to: it’s very hydrating and repairs the skin.
This is a staple for any climate, and really, keeps both Yoyo and I sane. An ultra-hydrating serum like this one helps other products to work effectively and penetrate the skin. The slightly gel-like texture leaves a bit of stickiness, but nothing that really bothers us.
T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum
I’ve been struggling with sensitive skin ever since I overdosed on AHAs early 2018, and nothing really cleared my skin up like this T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum. Changed my life, and I can’t live without it. I started off using it over the B-Hydra™ Intensive Hydration Serum, just to “dilute” it a little, in case it was too harsh for my skin. Still felt the tingling that came as a warning on the label, but eventually transitioned to using it right after toner. I wait 15 minutes for it to work its magic every night, before using a moisturiser. Since then, small little bumps have vanished, pimples only come once a month because of hormones, and it’s just glowy.
C-Firma™ Day Serum
Yoyo uses this on a daily basis, and never forgets to bring it everywhere she goes. Vitamin C does wonders for the skin, and this serum includes other antioxidants like ferulic acid and vitamin E, that help to protect the skin from free radicals. Whether the weather’s hot or cold, this gentle exfoliator hydrates, brightens, firms and even reduces dark spots and fine lines. This particular one by Drunk Elephant will stay active on the skin for up to 72 hours, and cannot be washed or rubbed off, which is just straight up magical. Just remember to apply sunblock!
Protini™ Polypeptide Cream
Proteins in your moisturiser might be a bit off-putting at first, but trust us when we say, this leaves your skin rejuvenated, bouncy and bright. It’s incredibly difficult to find a cream moisturiser that doesn’t break you out, and this one of the rare gems. It’s gel-like, lightweight, yet substantial and extremely hydrating. It’s compared to “adding a shot of protein to your smoothie”. After just one night with this, your skin instantly feels alive again. Whether you’re in the freezing cold or the blazing heat, this is one moisturiser that never lets us down.
