How To Stop Your Makeup From Melting Right Off Your Face
Every single thing you need to party proof your makeup, right over here. If these seven steps don't work, nothing will.| December 23, 2016
Alas, that part of the year that we’ve all been waiting for. We don’t know exactly how you’re spending the last weekends of the year, but we have a rough idea – plenty of eating, drinking, dancing, mingling and perhaps, some naughty business as well?
With party season comes your best party face. Because we want you to stay absolutely, gobsmacking-ly stunning from the start of the party to the end, we’ve come up with all the steps you need to take to party-proof your makeup. Everything from the best primers to the best foundations to the best lipsticks that will stay on through all the canapés, bubbly and kissing – we’ve got your back. If these don’t work, nothing will. May the woman with her mascara and eyeliner still intact by the end of the night win.
STEP 1: PREP YOUR SKIN
If your skin is smooth, it is easier to lock in the makeup. Exfoliate to remove the dead skin and tighten pores, then hydrate to prevent drying and to smoothen things out even more. If you’ve got time, try our seven-step mini facial with our go-to exfoliators and masks here.
STEP 2: PRIME, PRIME, PRIME
This is crucial to the mission of you being a complete stunner at whatever party you’re going to. Absolutely crucial! We like those by Make Up For Ever, Benefit and NARS for the face. If you’re planning to wear quite a bit of eye makeup, you’ll need eye primer as an extra precaution. We’ve got a whole list of our favourites here.
STEP 3: STAY-ALL-DAY PRODUCTS
Duh, but still. The most important bit is the foundation. If that melts, everything else goes down with it. Lucky for you, we have a bunch of liquid foundations that actually work for oily skin here. (NARS and Diorskin are our favourites.) As for the eyes, the mascaras and eyeliners that we tested here and here have all gone through the oily lids test. (But if we really had to pick one favourite for each, it’ll be CLIO’s Kill Black Liquid Eyeliner and Heroine Make’s Long & Curl Mascara.)
STEP 4: GO LIGHT & BLEND WELL
Going light with your foundation is key to keeping it on longer. Remember – your foundation is not your concealer. If you need more coverage, don’t start with a huge dollop of liquid foundation. Start with a bit and build it up gradually, a light layer each time. Using a good beauty tool like the Artis Brush or Beauty Blender will help to “push” the foundation into the skin, locking it down further.
STEP 5: SET IT
You’re nearly there! Keep everything in place with just a tiny bit of powder as you don’t want it to cake. (Cle De Peau and NARS have good ones, though MAC is easier on the wallet.) Then, for that final firing line, spray on makeup setting spray. The legendary one from Urban Decay is our favourite.
STEP 6: BLOT
Don’t ignore the signs. If you see your T-zone shining up in your reflection, head to the ladies and start blotting with a tissue. Lightly, please. If you need to touch-up, keep your pressed powder from the previous step in your handy-dandy party bag and whip it out when needed.
STEP 7: THE LIP PROBLEM
The first to go is always the lipstick. Nothing lifts an outfit quite like a red lip – we have the perfect holiday red here, by the way – but you also don’t want to be that girl left with just her lip liner on after 30 minutes. We’ve got the best stay-all-day liquid lipsticks here and our favourite red lippies of all time here. To give your puckers that extra boost, prep it and get it super smooth, then apply on a lip primer.
