12 Secrets You Didn’t Know About Gabrielle Chanel

It's Chanel Week at YOYOKULALA.com! We're kicking it off with the legendary Mademoiselle herself with an intimate look into her illustrious life.
|

For someone who so favoured black and white, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s life was as colourful as they come. Beginning in a dreary orphanage where she was raised by nuns – an experience which would later have a big influence on her aesthetic – her story is one woven out of ferocious rebellion and a relentless quest for independence and individuality. She came from nothing, but that didn’t stop her from becoming a fearsome force to be reckon with. “If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them from growing,” she said. She made her own wings, she made her own rules, and then she soared.

Behind the tweeds, pearls, quilted purses and two-tone pumps, Mademoiselle Chanel – never Madame – lived a life that would fuel books and films. From her stint as a cabaret singer to her dalliances with nobility, her friendships with fellow greats like Cocteau and Dali to the shutting down of her beloved atelier and reopening in post-war 1954, dull moments were few in her world, every experience a thread in the fabric of the Chanel we know today. Gabrielle is Chanel, Chanel is Gabrielle. To kick off our very own self-proclaimed Chanel Week – you’ll get a clearer picture very soon, promise – we’re starting with the Mademoiselle herself and things about her you probably didn’t know.
