5 Perfectly Rational Reasons To Wear A Belt Bag

Or fanny pack. Or bum bag. Whatever your ma calls it. I mean, if Carrie Bradshaw approves, you must be doing something right.

Belt bag. Bum bag. Waist pouch. Fanny pack. A bag by any other name has never been trickier. In Season 4 of Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw shook the world when she wore a Gucci fanny pack to visit Aiden at work post-cheating with Big. On one hand, Carrie looked damn fine. She matched it with an elegant low ponytail, a simple cropped top and fitted striped skirt, and her abs were on fire. On the other hand, though, it was still a fanny pack.

Like so many things, fanny packs have evolved since. Don’t get me wrong – the dad ones still exist. But far better ones have joined the fray. Celine, Kenzo, Marni, Prada and most recently, Gucci. People seem to have stopped calling it the fanny pack altogether, preferring the more sophisticated “belt bag”. Can a name change and fancier facade mask it from the fact that it is, at its core, a bag attached to your waist? Why, yes, yes it can. We liked it when Carrie wore it way back when for reasons beyond the sartorial, and we still like it now. Here’s several very practical reasons why:

Reason #1: It’s a belt and a bag. You get to hold up your pants and you get to keep your bare necessities in it while at it.

Reason #2: You can go completely hands free. We don’t know about you, but that makes it the best party bag in the world. Stares be damned.

Reason #3: You don’t have to use it as a fanny pack. Take this Prada one, for instance. It works as a shoulder bag, cross-body bag and a fanny pack. Who doesn’t love a wardrobe multi-tasker. (And by that definition, any bag can be a potential fanny pack if it’s small and has a detachable strap that’ll fit through your belt loops. Like that one time Yoyo converted her mini vintage Chanel 2.55 into a fanny pack.)

Reason #4: It looks amazing over a coat or a blazer. It’ll also hold them down, so there’s none of that floppy coat edge action. Actually, scratch that – it looks great with a t-shirt and even a dress. As long as you pick the right shape, size and material, you’re good.

Reason #5: Carrie Bradshaw approves. As do Kendall Jenner and a string of street style regulars. Dad bag no more.
