An Up Close Look at The Nike x Yoyo Cao Sneaker Collaboration
You might have previously caught wind of my dream Nike collaboration on Instagram. Now here's the full reveal. Take a closer look at the design and inspiration behind it all.| March 23, 2020
It’s no secret by now that I have a longstanding obsession with sneakers. And particularly, white sneakers. They are the shoes that I reach for on the daily, whether I’m out and about running errands or looking to lend a casual flair to a formal outfit. You can’t quite go wrong with them. Granted my unwavering loyalty to white sneakers, when Nike approached me last year to work on a pair together, you bet I was ecstatic.
Being a sneaker enthusiast myself, I had a clear vision going into the project. Not so much interested in the seasonal trends, I wanted to design a pair of sneakers that was a timeless classic. After all, that was what sneakers meant to me – footwear that I could wear for months and months on end without concerns of falling out of trend. In picking the sneaker style, I went with what is personally my favourite cut and also one that I believe is generally flattering on everyone, the Nike Blazer Mid. It cuts off slightly above the ankle at a height that is suitable for even those on the petite end. As for the colourway, it was really a no brainer. You can’t go wrong with white and it essentially pairs well with anything and everything. What’s a sneaker without functionality and versatility?
At the same time, I had also to find a distinguishing quality to make them truly unique. If you were to observe the shoes, you’d notice that the Nike Swoosh is cut from a contrasting fabric and the back of the shoe reads “Hey” on one side and “You” on the other. A great conversation starter, don’t you think? The greeting, inspired by my travels and all the people from different walks of life that I have met, is meant as an ice-breaker when you meet someone new in a foreign land.
Practical yet with a touch of personality, the sneaker is a perfect representation of my personal style. It’s been an amazing experience getting to create my own sneaker with Nike and you can say, it’s a dream come true! Thank you so much to everyone at Nike for making this collaboration come to life.
