Chanel’s Latest Haute Couture Outing Is a Breathtaking Garden Wedding

Floral arches, fairy lights, loose petals on the floor, wooden chairs – it's a fairytale wedding and you're invited.

It’s been long-established that Chanel’s haute couture shows draw to a grand end with a supermodel bride parading down the runway. Although on par in grandeur, the haute couture showings were never a full-blown wedding affair. Until now.

“I knew we couldn’t organise a big show, that we would have to invent something else, so I came up with the idea of a small cortege that would come down the stairs of the Grand Palais and pass beneath arches of flowers. Like a family celebration, a wedding,” explained Virginie Viard. In seeing her vision to life, Viard transformed the Grand Palais into a bohemian dreamscape. Flower arches, fairy lights, wooden chairs, floor covered in loose petals – it was a garden soirée for the proverbial newlyweds.

Fittingly, the collection, a lineup of 32 looks, was a wardrobe that embodied the mood for celebration. But far from the ostentatious, Viard’s renditions of party-appropriate garb spoke of quiet elegance. A white lace dress with a skirt that comes off when the dancefloor calls. A multi-coloured frou-frou skirt. Voluminous tulle skirts fit for a princess. Tapered waistcoats with the most decadent embroidery. The silhouettes themselves were none too complicated but in classic Chanel fashion, there’s always more to the pieces than meets the eye.

It might’ve been lost on-screen but the sheer hours of meticulous work that goes into every last detail never ceases to amaze. Take, for instance, the hem of a floral chiffon dress lined with individual blooms embroidered one by one. While nothing compares to seeing the collection come to life before our very eyes, Chanel’s haute couture shows remain a beacon of hope. That fairytale ending with the Chanel bride perched on a white horse? All stories have a happy ending.
