Can You Pile On Jewellery Without Looking Like A Crazy Person?
Plus, 15 of the prettiest calorie-free neck candy of the season, all here for your stacking pleasure.| January 22, 2017
Coco Chanel famously said that before leaving the house, one should always take one thing off. This is coming from a woman who loved her strands and strands of pearls as much as she loved her bejewelled cuffs, brooches, earrings and hats, so she should know what she’s talking about. The thing is, should there really be a rule when it comes to piling jewellery? You’ve committed to the cause, might as well go all out. Maximalism to the max!
There is one general rule of thumb, though. Mademoiselle Chanel loved her accessories, but she knew how to balance all that sparkle on her arms and décolletage out. Let the jewellery to the talking, keep everything else on the down low. For the Mademoiselle, it meant simple skirt suits, cardigans and flare trousers. For us, it means wardrobe classics like white shirts, Bianca Jagger-type pant suits and simple knits.
If you’re a little unsure of what goes with what, it helps to start your stacking with one statement piece and building the rest of your ensemble from there. A mix of statement and minimal pieces is a good way to go. For example, let’s say this tasseled gold-tone necklace from Chloe and this oxidised silver-plated choker from Dannijo. Then, these delicate necklaces from Saint Laurent and Sarah & Sebastian for the final touch.
Or, you could ignore everything we just said and just stack your jewellery however you please. Will you look like a crazy person? Maybe, but who cares? Iris Apfel wears more than ten pieces of statement jewellery at a time and she looks incredible. You make your own rules.
