Brand To Know: Oscar Tiye
Get to know the sweet-with-a-twist Italian shoe label that we think Carrie Bradshaw would have braved hell and high water for.| August 17, 2017
Sex and the City‘s Carrie Bradshaw loved her Louboutins, Choos and Blahniks, and if Milan-based Oscar Tiye existed during the show’s run, we’re pretty sure it would have made the list. Like good ol’ Bradshaw, Oscar Tiye’s beautiful shoes are sweet and feminine – but they come with an edge. They mean business, but they’re also darn pretty.
Oscar Tiye is Amina Muaddi’s labour of love. Previously from L’Uomo Vogue and GQ, the Jordanian-Romanian spent time working alongside shoemaking artisans in the famed Riviera del Brenta in Venice, learning the craft from scratch. With so much thought behind her shoes, it is hardly any wonder that her clientele grew so quickly over a span of just three years. Zoe Saldana, Giovanna Battaglia, Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner are all fans.
If you’re wondering what’s the deal behind the name, it’s actually quite romantic. “Tiye” comes from Queen Tiye of Egypt, wife to Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who gave her golden scarab jewellery as a wedding gift. It’s the reason why all of Muaddi’s shoes are marked with a gold scarab. “Oscar” comprises the letters from the names of her family members. And there you have it – Oscar Tiye. The label is stocked all over the world, but if you want to take the shortcut, Net-a-Porter carries a small collection. (We love the Eva satin mules and suede sock boots, in case you need a little push.)
