Rosie Assoulin is a master of balance. Since her big stage debut in 2013, Assoulin has found away to meld drama, elegance, whimsicality, minimalism, polish and ease into her collections. A silky gown of green that comes with its own cape, balloon sleeve blouses of various forms that will go with essentially anything, the widest palazzo pants you’ll ever see, straw bags shaped like water jugs – that’s just the tip of the Assoulin iceberg.
She even made a debutante-style dress silk organza dress dotted with dried flowers and smiley faced stickers, which she named “Double Entendre”. This is a woman who knows how to have fun with clothes – but also knows how to make clothes that will stay in your closet for a long, long time. Take this red tiered ruffle skirt, for example. It looks like a lot, but you can dress it down in a minute with just a t-shirt and sneakers. Is it any wonder that that Assoulin was awarded the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2015? Hardly. Is it any wonder that her ever-expanding clientele includes Rihanna, Zendaya, Margot Robbie, Solange Knowles, Karlie Kloss, Emilia Clarke and Michelle Monaghan? Hardly.
Assoulin is also proof of another fashion myth – you don’t need “formal” training to be stellar at the design game. The New Yorker left design school after four months, but went out to intern at Adam Lippes, Oscar de la Renta and Lanvin before going her own way. Experience, as always, is far more important. Assoulin is something of a darling in the fashion circuit, but we decided to make her label this week’s “Brand To Know” because we sincerely think you all should know.
Also, she made a seashell bag for Spring/Summer ’18. How do you not talk about a seashell bag? See more snapshots from her Spring/Summer ’18 collection above and shop some of our favourites from her label below.
