Brand To Know: Nanushka
Get to know the up-and-coming Budapest label behind the off-the-shoulder wrap tops you're seeing all over Instagram (including ours).| August 2, 2017
Nanushka is proof of what social media can do for a young and up-and-coming label. The brainchild of Hungarian designer and London College of Fashion alum Sandra Sandor, Nanushka officially began in 2004, but it wasn’t until the recent seasons that it started to really come into its own thanks to Instagram and its leading ladies. We’ll bet that you’ve seen one of Sandor’s wrap off-the-shoulder tops floating around. Our girl Vanessa Hong is a fan of her summer-ready knit – which sounds like an oxymoron, but it isn’t the way Sandor does it – dresses.
Not that Sandor had planned for Nanushka’s Instagram fame to take off the way it did. “It was really an organic thing, and it wasn’t a strategy back then or even when we joined Instagram,” she says in an interview with Fashionista. She simply sought out influencers she liked and got her pieces over to them. It is a strategy that young labels engage in, but at the end of the day, Sandor’s clean-cut, relaxed and surprisingly affordable pieces speak for themselves. If you’ve got good clothes, people will wear them.
Nanushka’s Spring ’17 is the stuff of desert vacation and summer in the city dreams. (Yoyo most recently wore one of Sandor’s pieces in Rome.) For the coming fall, however, the label switch gears into warmer tones and boxier silhouettes, though no less laid-back: brown leather overalls and puffer jackets, cropped leopard print pants and matching neckties, full black leather coats with feminine waist belts and pink pants with matching pink boots. We have some of our favourites above, but you can see the rest here. Also – because sharing is caring – Nanushka’s Spring ’17 collection is currently on sale.
