Chanel’s Cruise Collection Just Took Our Wanderlust Fever to a New High
Travel might be out of the question in the foreseeable future but that doesn't mean a girl can't dream.| June 10, 2020
If all things had gone accordingly to plan, Chanel’s Cruise 2021 would have unfolded before us against the backdrop of majestic cliffs and deep blue Mediterrenean waters of Capri, a whimsical island located in Italy’s Bay of Naples. Instead, as the world came to a standstill due to the coronavirus pandemic, Virginie Viard played pretend travel. By the stretch of her imagination, Viard gathered a clear enough sense of the islet. She envisioned it as “the islands, the scent of the eucalyptus, the pink shade of the bougainvillea.”
Chanel’s Cruise 2021 collection comes at a time when the industry as a whole reevaluates its pre-existing model. While some a few prominent names in fashion have announced a step down from the fashion week calendar, Chanel shows no signs of slowing down. Viard was quick to retune her creative process and the eventual delivery of the Cruise collection. This meant working with fabrics already on hand and even pulling wardrobe staples and accessories available in store. Can you spot the pieces?
Adaptability also translated directly into the season’s pieces, many of which are designed with versatility in mind. A rather apt approach, considering that to travel is to adapt. You could be heading straight to dinner from an afternoon laying by the beach. From the airport to a spa while you await check-in. Or jump onto a boat right after lunch to go island hopping. The collection’s convertible clothing will have you covered, literally and figuratively speaking. Long skirts become strapless dresses when pulled up. Bathing suits double up as tops. Long chiffon jackets work as well as a coverup on the beach as they do as part of a modest ensemble for dinner. The collection’s range of tropical weather appropriate lineup of footwear – espadrilles, flats and sandals – echoes a similar pragmatism to its ready-to-wear.
Practicality aside, Viard kept the collection visually exciting by a stellar range of covetable accessories. The chain belts we’ve already been acquainted with in the past returned in new iterations, if we weren’t already convinced they were set to be the piece de resistance of summer fits, we now are. Can we also take a moment to admire the stand-out embellished bikini and bandeau tops that we’re certain will make their way onto the grids of Instagram It girls, and oh, not forgetting the visor-sunglasses hybrid. Thanks to Chanel, our summer shopping list just got a whole lot longer even if it means getting dress up with nowhere (but the grocery store) to go to.
