Chanel Has A New Bag, Everybody Freak Outby Candice Chua
Chanel doesn’t drop an “official” new bag very often, so when it does, it makes sure that the bag is worth the attention. The new kid on the block is called the Gabrielle, named after Coco Chanel herself. Those with sharp eyes would have spotted it at Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2017 show amid the wires, disco prints and robots. I, unfortunately, was not sharp enough. Too distracted by everything else like a kid in a candy store. What’s new.
Where the 2.55 and Boy bags are more structured and proper, the Gabrielle is like the chill, younger sister who likes to grab, throw and go. There’s no fuss with the Gabrielle. Sure, it has got the same adjustable chain strap, but its suppler shape means it is born to be worn as a cross-body. Perfect for the girl on the go. The fact that you can see everything in your bag at once because of the Gabrielle’s wide base is really the low-fat icing on the cake. (Low-fat icing exists, right? TELL ME IT DOES.) New travel bag, anyone?
I’m kind of digging the way it was styled for the show. One side of the strap on each shoulder, but the bag remains on one side. It’s like a side backpack, if that makes any sense. Try taking this bag from me, THIEVES!
If you think about it, the Gabrielle may be the most “Chanel” bag of them all, and it’s not just because of its name. Gabrielle Chanel was all for class with utmost comfort during her time, and the Gabrielle seems to follow this ethos quite closely. And don’t think for second that it’s a “young girls only” bag. Apparently, Pharrell Williams is shoo-in as the face of the Gabrielle, alongside fellow Chanel old-timers Cara Delevingne, Caroline de Maigret and Kristen Stewart.
So, what do you think of the Gabrielle? Do you think it’ll garner the same cult status as the Boy bag? Tell me in the comments below.
