Chanel Throws The Most Epic Show Of The Season

There was an actual near life-sized rocket in the Grand Palais. An *actual* rocket with smoke, sparks and engines that moved. We're dead.

Chanel’s sets in the last year, though beautiful, have been a little pared back. (Though, pared back in Chanel’s books when it comes to show sets is still pretty damn spectacular.) After Tuesday’s incredible Fall/Winter 2017 show though, we suspect that it was all strategic. They tease a little at first, then pull an epic move out of the blue so that you’re completely floored. One time it was a supermarket, the other time an airport and yesterday, a Chanel rocket that actually “took off”, complete with a countdown, smoke, sparks and Elton John’s “Rocket Man” playing in the background. (We think David Bowie’s “Life On Mars” and “Space Oddity” would have fitted right in, but that’s just us.) It was so intense, exciting and just downright epic. Sorry for using the same word twice, but seriously! Emotions! So many of them!

But what of the clothes? References to the space theme was smart and yes, plenty pretty. Glittery capped disco boots in place of chunky space shoes, black looks dotted with sparkly things to look like galaxies and constellations, little astronauts on the floaty pieces for Casual Fridays. The stiff rim collars, a shoutout to spacesuits worn by astronauts, take the cake for cleverest detail of the season. The brand new Gabrielle bag also makes its second appearance on the runway since last season’s “Data Centre” Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Little Hudson Kroenig a.k.a Lagerfeld’s too-cute godson and pint-sized muse carried one while jaunting down the winding runway, proof that even boys can carry the masculine-meets-feminine accessory. Gabrielle Chanel would have been so proud. We’ve seen so many wonderful collections here in Paris, but Chanel’s will be the one that will leave people talking for years and years and years to come.
