Forget Black, We’re Going For Bright Colour Blocking Instead

Black will always be the new black, but damn, these ladies are making a major case for solid colour on colour. Do you dare to try?

There’s something up with me and I blame it on my recent vacation in Tokyo. (By the way, thanks Yoyo for giving me leave to saunter about the streets of Harajuku for a week while you were on a work trip in Rome.) Tokyo is one of the most vibrant cities I’ve ever visited and when your eyes have witnessed that much energy and vigour, everything you’ve seen before sort of pales in comparison. Or, in my case, dulls in comparison. After seeing how daring the youth of Tokyo can be in their style choices, from the specks of glitter on their cheekbones to their red eye shadow to their penchant for vintage, my own predominately black and white wardrobe suddenly looks so…uneventful.

Don’t get me wrong – I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing black and white. Lately though, my eyes have been drawn to serious colour. Primary, secondary, you name it. And not just one colour, but colour on colour. Green on blue, red on pink, red on blue, purple on purple,  just sign me up. It’s not just the streets of Harajuku that I’m holding responsible. We saw major colour blocking going on last season on the streets of Paris Fashion Week, and though those looks were statement-making, there was still something about them that looked effortless. The trick here is simple: pick one or two colours, then keep the rest minimal, say a pair of jeans, a simple pump or boot, a set of neutrals. What do you say – ditch the black and start going primary? Get started with our round-up below.
