If You’re Going To Do The Eighties, This Is How To Do It
No headache-inducing neons, leotards and leg warmers, but big, big shoulders, extra tight mini dresses and glossy leather? Uh, sign us up, puh-lease.
| April 5, 2018When the style from eighties gets called into question, the mind goes to two extremes. On one end, we have the big hair, mullets, glaring neon, leotards and leg warmers. The other end, Heathers, Pretty In Pink, Studio 54 and Karl Lagerfeld’s early days at Chanel. Thankfully for everyone’s eyes, the season’s eighties redux is full and firmly the latter.
Instead of going full-fledged on the decade, the references were both subtle and put to the extreme. Strong shoulders are expected in an eighties throwback, but instead of just plainly taking the strong shoulder and reinventing it, he took it and multiplied it by three times, giving blazers and coats that cocoon the body. Miuccia Prada did the same at Miu Miu, mixing in the power shoulder with puffy patent and pastel leather. At Philosophy, the silhouette was juxtaposed on soft knits.
At Saint Laurent and Balenciaga, dresses were very short and very tight, modernised with clean lines and a sharp, plunging neckline, but still splashed in jewel tones, florals and zebra stripes, almost a reminder that while the eighties might have been garishly loud, it was also wildly fun.
The spirit of the style in eighties was that people didn’t take themselves too seriously when it came to dressing up, a fine reminder for any decade. Big hair, big ruffles, big earrings, the works. Get a head start on the eighties throwback with our edit below.
