Ever Wondered How A Pair Of New Eyes Experienced Fashion Week?
It's not what you think, and some of the things that happen behind closed doors may come as a shock to you. Welcome to fashion week, as told by a complete newbie.| September 26, 2018
The idea and concept of fashion shows are always foreign. Sure, there are videos, photos and livestreams, but it’s not all glamour and dazzle at these places, and there’s always something that goes on before and after the cameras turn away.
This is where I come in, bringing you fresh eyes of what fashion week’s really like behind all the pictures of street style stars and celebrities.
Juggling jet lag and a 9 A.M. call-time is probably not the best for both your mental and physical health, but it’s the only option you can take as shows start as early as 9:30 A.M. Factoring in morning grogginess, traffic jams and unexpectedly large crowds at entrances, there’s always a heave of relief when you sit down on time, something that is of the utmost importance. Plus, once the show starts, the doors are shut and will STAY shut until it ends.
Each and every second counts at these places. Frantic staff and ushers shooing the audience into their seats is not an uncommon sight. Once the lights go dim, the models walk out, and the show’s over in a quarter of an hour to twenty minutes. Models will speed right by, and if you miss that chance to snap a shot, it’s gone, forever.
It’s the same with street style photos. Every photographer, and I mean every. single. one. will run for that money shot. Time and tide waits for no man. Even inside, the moment the lights come on after the show, everyone gets up at the same time, and 500 well-dressed people pack themselves like sardines to squeeze out of a single exit, only to be bombarded by a horde of street style photographers and drivers keeping a lookout for their passengers.
Fashion week’s messy, confusing and the traffic can be a pain, especially for the frustrated, clueless locals just trying to get their breakfast or lunch. But I’ve kept my wide-eyed gazes to the minimum, and kept my focus on truly immersing myself in the experience. So far, it’s been magical. To be continued? Perhaps.
