Step Into A Timeless Wardrobe at Fendi
In his debut ready-to-wear Fall/Winter 2021 collection, Jones expands the Roman house's vocabulary yet still speaking the language of the woman who favours a timeless wardrobe.| February 28, 2021
If there was anything to have been distilled from Kim Jones’s couture debut (also his first formal outing at Fendi) last month, it’s his keen sense of the woman he was designing for. At his debut ready-to-wear presentation, Jones sharpened his vision for the storied Roman maison.
Taking the helm of a house whose history harks back to as early as 1926 where does one begin a new chapter? But it’s true what they say, the hardest questions have the simplest answers. Rather than delve into the endless depth of house archives, he looked to the beating heart of the maison for inspiration. The Fendi family.
“The Fendi family are women of intellect who work hard – and that’s what I wanted to celebrate,” noted Jones in the brand’s official release. “A powerful dynasty.”
The wardrobes of the five Fendi sisters formed the backbone of the collection. Can you spot the bell sleeves of a washed mink and bonded suede coat? The pinstripes of their office attire? The utilitarian shirt jacket that’s an anatomy of Silvia Venturini Fendi’s daily uniform?
Not forgetting Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy – the collection was in equal parts a tip of the hat to the house codes established by the late designer. The Karligraphy monogram was imprinted in the ready-to-wear separates throughout the collection. While Lagerfeld himself might not have been one for retrospects, Jones dug into archival sketches. In doing so, he conceived the architectural heel you might’ve noticed on the runway.
Whether it may have been looking at the past or honing into the present, Jones never lost sight of his cause: to build a wardrobe for real women.“I’m taking the amazing, strong women who I both know and work with, and listening to their needs. There’s a usefulness to the collection, explored in a chic, timeless way,” explained Jones.
You don’t have to look too deep into it, if not for anything the collection’s neutral colour palette speaks for itself. These are pieces meant to wear well with time rather than an indulgence of seasonal trends.
