Ah, Alessandro Michele. The reigning king of maximalism and the desire of our inner vintage-obsessed magpie. It is always a visual feast at Gucci and again, this season was no exception. At first glance through the Instagram Stories of Gucci’s show-goers – I was unfortunately stuck in home base – the eighties feel was immediate. Giant sleeves, embellished shoulders, rhinestone leotards, jogger suits, Elton John and Bob Mackie references left, right and centre – Gucci is here to remind us all that the eighties was the true era of maximalism.

Outside of the eighties, trying to pinpoint a single source of inspiration for this collection is fairly impossible. You have a suede vest covered with a giant Bugs Bunny, a fully sequinned sweater with Snow White just about to bite into that darn poisoned apple, patterns and shapes from the Far East, delicate lace dresses featuring Gucci’s logo on repeat, rubber totes, book clutches, embellished chin straps and skull caps. It is a mix bag, but it is still plenty fun.

There has been a renewed interest in designer accessories from the nineties and before among the fashion crowd and Gucci hasn’t missed that memo. If you’re as vintage obsessed as we are, do sit down.
