How Our Favourite Instagram Ladies Are Surviving The Summer

From insane earrings that look like weapons to sleeves of puffs and stuff, as told by the leading ladies of Instagram.

Summer – love it when we’re at the beach, hate it when we’re everywhere else. It wouldn’t be so bad if we could frolic and play and bask away in swimwear all day (all that rhyming was definitely intentional), but alas, societal conventions demand otherwise. When you already have your hands full trying to keep your makeup from sliding off your face and just generally not shrivelling up into a raisin in the relentless summer heat, dressing up is probably not at the top of your to-do list. Days like these, the good old t-shirt and denim cut-off combo seems all too easy. Us? Guilty as charged.

Still, we’re glass half full kind of people. We’re lemons into lemonade kind of people. Give us terrible weather, do you? Well, we’re sticking it to the man sun! The t-shirt and denim cut-off combo is all well and good, but if popping on a giant earring (that still allows for plenty of ventilation) or putting on some breezy puff-sleeves can make the summer heat seem just a tad rosier, we’re doing it.

There are ways to work around this heat and still look like you cared to dress up, and we’re taking cues from some of our favourite Instagram ladies: Tamu McPherson, Chriselle Lim, Aimee Song, Evangelie Smyrniotaki, Tiffany Hsu, Diletta Bonaiuti and Linda Tol. We’ve rounded up 7 things that need to be a part of your summer survival wardrobe and our top picks for each that you can shop straightaway.

Is this an earring, paperweight or weapon? If you find yourself asking that question the next time you look at a pair of earrings, you’re on the right track.

The one-piece is back and it’s sexier than ever, some cut high on the thigh, others with backs dangerously low. Look for one that can easily be disguised as a bodysuit with a pair of jeans or a linen skirt. An excuse to wear swimwear even though we’re nowhere close to the beach? We’ll take it.

Fight fire with fire. Can’t beat the heat? Join it by pulling out all your red duds. It helps that red photographs gloriously under the sun.

More than just shields for your head. While we love a giant sunhat as much as the next girl, go for a straw hat with a flat top and skinnier rim if you’re looking for versatility.

The summer equivalent of a Little Black Dress. If you need even more ventilation, make like our girl Tiffany and go for a cropped top and a matching skirt. Giant slit optional.

We know it’s hot, but there’s no reason to wear those darn rubber flip-flops. Lace-up shoes can be a chore to put on, but they keep your feet breezy while nailing that it’s-summer-and-I-don’t-have-a-care-in-the-world look.

There never was a sleeve as breezy as the loose puff sleeve. Throw in a low-neck or an off-shoulder and you’ll be wondering why you didn’t go down the puffy blouse route in the first place.
