Goodbye, Karl Lagerfeld: A Look Back At His Legacy
The world lost a great fashion icon, a pioneer, a re-inventor and extraordinaire. May your legacy live on forever.
| February 23, 2019When news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing circulated the web, our first immediate (and hopeful) thought was, “Is it fake news?” His deep-rooted presence and imprint on the fashion industry is one that’s indisputable, and for such a long time, too, that his departure was met with bewilderment and great sorrow.
It wasn’t long ago when we last saw Karl in his signature white ponytail and immaculate suit. Oh Karl, we’ll never forget your elaborate runway sets in Grand Palais — a full Chanel supermarket, Chanel airlines, casino Chanel, a life-sized replica of the Eiffel Tower and the iconic double-C rocket. A Chanel show is always met with anticipation and excitement, and it’s never a dull one.
But the man behind it all didn’t only put on the most groundbreaking shows for the world to indulge in. He is responsible for iconic pieces that will forever be cherished in our wardrobes: tweed skirtsuits, little black jackets, two-tone boots and quilted leather. He was a pioneer, not just at Chanel, but in the fashion industry as a whole.
At Fendi, Karl put forth innovation and modernity, often incorporating fresh, particularly practical ideas. Take the Peekaboo, for example, how it has a separate outer shell that can be removed to reveal another design, or be pieced together with another. He thinks about function, and how anyone would appreciate a jacket with good compartments for your ultimate essentials. It’s the small things that matter.
Now the big question is, who will succeed Karl’s roles at the maisons? We’ve been informed that his closest partner at Chanel of over 30 years, Virginie Viard, will be moving from Director to taking over his title as Creative Director. Fendi will be leaning on Silvia Venturini Fendi, the granddaughter of the brand’s founder.
Thank you, Karl, for the memories you’ve made. May your legacy live on forever and ever.
