Let’s Talk About That One Really Great Striped Shirt
Because we just found one that comes with two armpit holes and infinite layering opportunities. Bread and water for the next two weeks, here we come!| December 26, 2016
So recently, we had a bit of a wardrobe detox sitch at Team KULALA. New year, new me and all that jazz. While we’ve always known what we were not-so-secret shirt hoarders – white shirts are a given, obvs – we never realised how much that tendency applied to striped shirts. Blue striped shirts, specifically.
How many striped shirts does one person need, really? But then again, the search for the perfect shirt, whether striped or otherwise, seems to be one that never ends. Some days require a casual one with shorts, others require a dressier one under blazer and dresses. Then, there’s that one malleable striped shirt that you can twist and turn to your heart’s delight because it is just that right balance of crisp and soft. A girl needs to have her options.
Now, on the topic of malleable shirts. You’ve seen people treat their shirts like silly putty, twisting and tying them in ways that end up looking just so damn très chic. Jonathan Simkhai makes a similar case with the pajama shirt for Pre-Fall 2017. You think, “Ho ho, if they can do it, I can do it. It’s just sleeves and buttons.” But when the time finally comes for you to do the shirt magic, you’re lost. Where does this sleeve go again? Also, are my shoulders supposed to be starved of their mobility?
The next time you find yourself in a literal bind, consider this cotton-poplin shirt from Balenciaga. It looks like a regular, oversized striped shirt at first – until you notice the armpit holes. Or, the fact that you can stick your arms out of these holes and basically tie the sleeves anyway you like. Or, that you can wear it like a cape because apparently superheroes are extremely in season. Ba-bam. Three shirts in one. Scratch that – infinite shirts in one. This Tome shirt with a detachable sash looks like fun, too. No armpit holes, but still full of possibilities.
If you’ve got cash to spare, we say treat yo’self. It is Christmas, after all. If you don’t have cash to spare, steal the look – but with your mind. You’ve got a striped shirt lying around somewhere. Throw it over a turtleneck and jeans, then match the turtleneck to your shoes. With the legit cold weather we’ve been having, it is a look that you can actually embrace without the embarrassing sweat patches.
