How To Make A Statement With Minimalism
It doesn't always have to be about the loud pieces – clean tailoring with a hint of detail will do just fine.
| July 3, 2017Often when I’m asked to describe my style, I like to say “minimal, but with a twist”. When it comes to my wardrobe – and even for Exhibit – I love a clean-cut shape with little or nothing to distract from the tailoring and pressed lines. These are the pieces that end up getting a lot of mileage, because of how versatile they are and how easily they go with both simple and more dressed-up pieces.

But I also like my minimal pieces with a twist. A pop of detail to surprise and enhance, yet not take away the versatility of the piece. A buckle, metal buttons, an exposed zipper. Subtle stripes on baggy trousers, big sleeves and an exaggerated collar on a pristine white blouse, ruching and a slit on a maxi skirt. These are pieces that don’t rely on flashiness to become statements. I like a loud piece every once in a while, but minimal with a twist is where my heart is.

Nastygal turtleneck knit, Ellery drawstring maxi skirt, Nannacay woven basket bag, BOYY Boutique buckled slippers
Here, I styled three “minimal, but with a twist” pieces while out and about in Seoul. (They were surprisingly comfortable in Seoul’s summer, too.) I went for dressed-down instead of up, but these can easily be worked into dinner appropriate looks in no time. Below, we’ve rounded up pieces that are essentially simple, but with just enough detail to keep things interesting.
