The Skirt Suit Is Cool Again
Not just for the office ladies no more. We take the skirt suit out of the boardroom and onto the streets. (Well, the streets of London, specifically).| July 1, 2017
As proven by everyone from Bianca Jagger to Betty Catroux, the pantsuit has gained the reputation of being a foolproof classic that channels androgynous femininity, sensuality and power. Unfortunately, the same cannot be applied to its skirted cousin. Once the go-to for the fierce women of post-war 1940s, the skirt suit has since dulled down to become synonymous with forgotten secretaries and librarians – and not even the sexy kind. You think of skirt suits and that combination of a too-short, two-button blazer and a run-of-the-mill pencil skirt that does nobody and no body any favours comes to mind.
The thing is, skirt suits can be a lot of fun – if you’ve got the right elements. Let your mind wander away from that traditional definition of a skirt suit.
If the jacket is short, make sure it is razor-sharp and paired with a skirt that flatters, not hide. If you can, ditch the white shirt for, say, a turtleneck to switch things up a bit. Look for details like metal buttons, buckles or even military references that’ll only amp up the power factor even more. If you’re going for a strong shoulder, make it deliberate so as not to be accused of paying homage to the sadder side of the 1980s. Checks are hot as heck right now, but we’re also putting in our vote for khaki, camel and always, black.
Above, we played around with a skirt suit from Michael Michael Kors that is all buttons, pockets, exaggerated sleeve lengths and attitude. Coupled with a military cap – another thing to try the next time you put a skirt suit on – and London’s iconic red telephone booths, the look is almost serving police. The best part is it’s a look that you can completely take apart or pair with a t-shirt and sneakers for an entirely different look. We never say no to a double-duty piece.
