Shopping: We Like Big Belts And We Cannot Lie
When a girl walks in with an itty-bitty waist and a giant Margiela belt buckle in your face, we're like, "We want it. Now."| December 27, 2016
While you were blissfully chomping down on roast meat and mulled wine in your Christmas sweater, Rihanna was winning the Christmas dress-up game by parading around in a belt that can only be described as “Sartorial Santa”.
The belt in question: a bright red buckled belt from Maison Margiela with so much excess strap that it touches the knees. Santa himself would have dropped his traditional black and gold one for this in a heartbeat. (Though, honestly, I’ve always found the classic Santa belt to be quite chic.) Just a few inches shy of being some kind of high fashion corset, RiRi paired her massive belt with a black blazer, destroyed denims, razor-sharp booties and a tiny Louis Vuitton bag. When the accessory is that strong, simple pairing is all it takes.
In case you haven’t gotten the memo, belts are back and they’re bigger than ever. Like, bigger-than-your-fist big. John Galliano sent down a whole array of ornate belts with buckles the size of your face. Hedi Slimane brought the giant belt back in his final two collections for Saint Laurent, pairing them with seventies-style midi dresses and eighties-approved metallic mini dresses. Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini’s spin was daintier with massive leather wrap belts over ruffled sweaters and little lace dresses. One style, many, many ways.
It is interesting how something can go from an everyday piece to statement piece with just a change in proportions. The oversized belt won’t really help in holding up those too-big pants, but they will transform everything from your favourite shell coat and blazer to that satin slip that you’ve worn to near-death in the last months.
