Saint Laurent Takes Its Party to the End of the Earth
Anthony Vaccarello takes us where the silver winds blow but don’t be mistaken, he’s not dressing for the weather.| April 30, 2021
Towering cliffs shrouded in fog (or, as Anthony Vacarello romanticised, silver smoke), a majestic waterfall cascading down, a vast black sand-beach flanked by snow-capped mountains in the distance, waters inhabited by glistening clusters of ice floes. It’s against this theatrical scenography that Vaccarello presented Saint Laurent’s Fall 2021 showing.
“When I was thinking about this collection, I had this place in mind, like a movie director. It’s the idea of a girl in a landscape where she doesn’t belong,” revealed Vaccarello in an interview with Vogue. “I knew I wanted a wintry location, one which showed how strong nature is; how we are really nothing next to it, how ephemeral we are. It’s not a place where anyone is going skiing, but Saint Laurent should do something that’s like a dream: What the F?! Why is she there?” he continued.
But really, that was the last thing on anyone’s mind. The season’s high octane ready-to-wear lineup remained front and center of our attention. All eyes were on the acid brights, more is more approach in the accessories department, and risque hemlines. It’s a party anywhere the Saint Laurent woman goes, even if to the end of the earth.
The rock “n” roll glamour that’s so unmistakably Saint Laurent this season drew its inspiration from the spirit of the ‘80s while the streamlined tailored silhouettes were reminiscent of Saint Laurent’s silhouettes from the ‘60s. Cases in point: slinky, metallic bodysuits worn underneath tailored miniskirt suits.
Vaccarello’s wardrobe for a night out also extended to a lineup of leg-barring cocktail dresses and itty bitty tops paired with barely-there shorts. You’ll be entering into the room legs first, no doubt.
With the world gradually opening up again, Vaccarello’s Fall proposition comes in timely fashion. The party’s on – you’re invited!
