The Fanny Pack Just Won’t Go Away – And We’re Here For It

From Miu Miu to Balenciaga to Alexander Wang, these are not the mom and dad fanny packs of yore. Spandex and stirrups not included.
|

The fanny pack has always been considered a fashion faux pas, and has been for a very long time. If anyone was carrying a fanny pack one or two decades ago – with the exception being Carrie Bradshaw and her little Gucci fanny pack – it’d be for practical reasons, like keeping valuables safe or going hands-free while power walking through the park in spandex.

As always, it takes just one It girl to turn the tide. In the fanny pack’s case, it’s a throng, together with a myriad of designers. Following in the footsteps of the 1990s chunky dad sneakers, the fanny pack is officially back in business – but so, so much better than the nylon, neon ones of yore.

To start off, there’s the utilitarian look that’s a little bit bulkier and usually with more zips. We saw the brightest and sportiest from Fenty x Puma, House of Holland, Public School and Marc Jacobs that hung around the hips. Then, came the more sophisticated and luxurious looking bum bags of leather, sometimes minimalistic like Rochas and Sportmax, or with a bit more hardware like Givenchy and Valentino. Salvatore Ferragamo dabbles in a keychain alternative.

What is better than one nineties trend? TWO. For the logomaniacs, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga have your back, or should we say, your fanny. Zimmerman’s even got a woven one, for your future beach hangs and music festivals.

We love a hands-free bag, so you’ve probably guessed that we are beyond on board with the return of the fanny pack. If the runways and streets are any indication, the fanny pack is so much more than just a defunct mom or dad bag. While you wait for the Spring 2018 offerings to hit the stores, shop some that we’ve rounded up below (including some one-off vintage Louis Vuitton ones that are what street style dreams are made of).
