Staying On Neutral Ground
A.K.A How to trick your brain into thinking that cutoffs are appropriate for your next frou-frou luncheon.| July 4, 2016
The weather has been so unforgiving lately that the theme of my outfits in the past week seem to fall into the “neutral” territory. I’m not referring to just neutral colours, though that has happened as evidenced above. I’m also referring to “middle ground” dressing, that midpoint between polished and laid-back. You see, it’s been so hot that I’ve been trading my go-to jeans for denim cutoffs. It’s just too damn hot to wear anything else. But then, there are still dressier events and luncheons to go to. Cutoffs in such situations…do I dare?
Well, I did. Kill the suspense. Like I said, it’s too hot to wear anything else. But you see, there are ways to trick your brain into thinking that something as laid-back as cutoffs can be presentable.
First, you need a pair of kickass heels. Nothing ups the ante of a look better than a pair of kickass heels (these, these and these are nice). When you walk around taller with that clicking sound following your every step, your brain is half tricked already. Plus, everyone’s going to be so distracted by your shoes that they’ll forget you’re wearing cutoffs. Second, a wide-brimmed hat (similar here, here and here). There’s a reason why the Queen always wears a hat when she goes out – and she fancy. Think about it. Finally, a lightweight knit top. More proper than a t-shirt, more comfortable than a collared button-down shirt.
Brain, consider yourself tricked. We have a formula!
