A Study In Street Style: Jeanne Damas

Four words: JE NE SAIS QUOI. For this French looker, it's vintage jeans, bucket bags, that seventies flair and a whole lot of "I woke up like this".

They say the best runway is the one on the streets. The runway is where the official action happens, but it is on the streets that real style, worn by real people, is born. In “A Study In Street Style”, we turn the spotlight on some of the most notable street style stars of industry. If ever you’re dry on outfit inspiration, just check back here. We guarantee you’ll leave with at least a handful of styling ideas. That, or your (imaginary) money back.

French girls have always had a knack for being effortlessly chic. If you asked Jeanne Damas about it, she’d disagree and say, “But we wear the same clothes every day, a white t-shirt with jeans: so why are we fashion icons?” While that is technically true, Damas’ style is far from basic. The girl loves her jeans, but she loves her red lipsticks even more, so much so that she’s named her clothing line Rouje, a variation of the word “rouge” which is French for “red”.

If you’re seeking out an aura of je ne sais quoi that Parisians often evoke, take a few styling tips from Damas. Apart from her striking red lip, she keeps the rest of her makeup and her outfit very natural. She doesn’t even cover her eyebags. She likes to believe that they’re “designer”, according to an interview with Man Repeller, and that’s honestly the most French thing we’ve heard all day. Nothing speaks effortless better than a pair of espadrilles, well-fitted jeans (in a vintage cut, no less) and a sweater in her favourite colour. We’ve also noticed that she has a preference for shoes with a thin ankle strap, which adds just the right amount of delicateness.

When it comes to dresses, Jeanne Damas likes to keep it comfortable, flowy and feminine. It’s also why she thinks every woman should have a wrap dress in their wardrobe, along with boots and a cashmere sweater. At more formal events or occasions, a suit seems to be her go-to or a blazer dressed down with her favourite jeans. Her biggest tip? Don’t put too much thought into your outfits. You heard the lady.
