Trend Report: Tie-Dye Was Over in 2019?…Hold That Thought
The psychedelic print from the '60s continues its resurgence on the Spring/Summer 2020 runways and our hippie hearts are beaming with joy!| February 4, 2020
We people in fashion are in a constant search for the next new thing but ironically, also repeatedly circle back to past decades for inspiration. When did we all get so nostalgic? Your Dad’s puffer jacket from the ’90s and your hippie Hawaiian Uncle’s tie-dye t-shirt from the ’60s have gone on to lead the trends last year. And from the looks of it, these trends don’t quite seem like they will be fading back into the past anytime soon.
On the street style circuit, both the puffer jacket and tie-dyed anything have proved their staying power. We’ve seen the puffer jacket emerge as THE outerwear outside the Paris Men’s Fashion Week shows. Likewise, tie-dye has had a strong run on the the runways and off. It dominated the Spring/Summer ’19 runways and a full year later, was still noticeably present at the Spring/Summer 2020 showings.
To quote, Miranda Priestly, florals for Spring might be groundbreaking (read: sarcasm), but putting the sass aside, the resurgence of the psychedelic motif from the ’60s was a refreshing break away from well, florals. The spritely hues typical of tie-dye prints basically scream Summer. You and your tie-dye acquisition against a tropical backdrop living your best life – isn’t that just the visual that pops into your mind?
You could think of tie-dye as a spokesperson for freedom and liberation – an ethos that also applies on the design end. The rebirth of the print on the runways takes the print from the ’60s into the present. Looking beyond t-shirts – don’t get us wrong, we still love us a good t-shirt – designers have rendered the print on everything from slouchy jumpsuits to denim jeans to breezy dresses. If anything, a girl is spoilt with choices.
As much as we love tie-dye and all that it stands for, we have to acknowledge the fact that styling tie-dye can be a rather tricky undertaking. One that also very much depends on your personality. If you’re not one who’s so much into having your outfit scream for attention, we’d suggest keeping the rest of the outfit muted. On the other hand, if you’re waiting for the world to take notice, you could do a tie-dye on tie-dye moment or pick one of the colours from the print to further punctuate your outfit with.
Oh and might we also suggest a potential afternoon weekend project of creating your very own one of a kind tie-dye piece. If you’re not willing to spend the buck on the trend, doing it yourself could be a way to go!
