Pierpaolo Piccioli Proves There’s Beauty Even in Darkness

While Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Fall/Winter 2021 outing was a sombre, monochrome parade, it’s none lacking in elegance and grace.

Pierpaolo Piccioli’s showcases at Valentino are, more often than not, grand affairs. Can anyone ever forget the ethereal ariel circus he staged for the maison’s Spring/Summer 2021 couture presentation? Or the year prior when Celine Dion sat front row moved to tears by the clothes paraded before her. It’s what one would expect of a presentation orchestrated by Piccioli – the raw emotions, theatrical performances, awe-inspiring clothing, et al.

But leave all those expectations at the door and meet Piccioli’s grunge act. The entire collection, a monochrome parade of black and white (save for the occasional pops of gold), was the designer’s act of rebellion. It might’ve been a sombre occasion but in typical Piccioli fashion, there remained signature touches of frills and fancy.

Look closer and you’d notice the 3D floral embroidery on the collection’s coats, the intricate lacework on floor-sweeping Victorian dresses, the laser cut patterns on oversized sweaters. It all still exhibited a distinct Valentino character, while still speaking to the times. We are, after all in the midst of a global pandemic, fashion encompassing.

What Piccioli, however, proves is the beauty that’s to be found even in the darkness.
