Our Top 10 Personal Style Moments From Yves Saint Laurent
The legendary designer would have been 80 today. Happy birthday, Monsieur Saint Laurent!| August 1, 2016
While the male designers of today prefer to go about their designing duties in good old t-shirts and jeans, things were a lot different way back when – and this was especially so for Yves Saint Laurent. Not only did he have an incredibly good eye for style – the incomparable Loulou de la Falaise and Betty Catroux were his lifelong muses – Saint Laurent himself had great style. After all, he coined the all-famous phrase “Fashion fades, style is eternal”, and he had to know what he was talking about. Trench coats over fit-and-flare pants, belts over utilitarian jackets and tunics and checks-on-stripes-on-white? And is that a velvet pantsuit we see? Excuse us while we pin everything onto our mental mood board for the month.
To celebrate what would have been his 80th birthday, we’ve scoured the interwebs for 10 great style moments from the bespectacled designer. So many, if not all, of them are still relevant today, along with his Le Smoking tuxedo for women, safari dresses and all-sheer-everything look. Saint Laurent empowered and freed women then, and we’re still feeling the effects of his iconic looks today, decades on. Happy birthday, Monsieur Saint Laurent!
