KULALA Weekends: Clan Café, The Ritzy Brunch Spot Within A Club
A stone's throw away from the city, this cafe is full of hearty broths and nostalgic dishes that'll send you back and forth in time. And eurgh, THAT kueh salat!| August 2, 2018
Visiting Singapore for the first time? Need a new place in town to hang with your peeps? Shimmy down over here for more of our “KULALA Weekends” series. If you have a haunt to recommend, drop it in the comments below.
Tucked away at the end of a row of shophouses lies a club – no, not a nightclub, but one that is exclusive to its members only and provides them with more than just a space. We love the sound of it already. That club? Straits Clan, one filled with entertainment, event spaces as well as work and wellness facilities. Getting a membership here would set you back quite a bit, but like the proverbial silver lining, their Clan Café is open to public.
Formerly the New Majestic Hotel, a step into the café would bring you back into a traditional shophouse with the tile-patterned flooring and breeze-block walls. However, the furnishing is modern and very chic with a good mix of interesting statement marble tables and gold-accent dining chairs and lamps. It also houses a tropical floral concierge by The Humid House, creating gorgeous set-ups and with flora that would be exotic to even those who live in this part of the world. All sounding so terrifically good so far, eh?
Alas, the most important aspect of this café is its food. The menu is a mix of east and west, allowing you to make a choice between something more experimental versus a more homely meal. Think double-boiled soups and grain bowls with contrasting flavours that would dance on your palate. For dessert, their signature kueh salat is a must-have nostalgic sweetness. Trust us when we say that this is the kueh salat to end all kueh salats.
So, if you’re bummed out about where to have brunch this weekend, have a taste of Clan Café. A little tip? Make sure you get a reservation secured because when you have a place that hits all the spots in a tiny city like ours, free seats fly off the shelves like hot cakes.
